A 400w HPS bulb provides 5000 lumens (minimum) as far away as 24" from the bulb. Beyond 24" from the 400w HPS and the amount of light becomes insufficient. At 36" from the bulb there is not enough energy to drive healthy photosynthetic reactions.
Considering that a bulb in a reflector will cast light out at a 60 degree angle the reflector must be maintained at a minimum height of 10" from the top of the canopy to establish a footprint of 2.5x2.5.
A footprint of 42"x42" is far too large for a 400w system to light effectively. 30"x30" is nearly too large already but I will entertain the idea. In a 30x30 setup I think that you could cram in as many as 25 plants in there. This would leave a 6" diameter for each flower to grow into.
Auto flowering plants are lame though. Just get yourself some Northern Lights and run it on 12/12 from clone. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with Ruderalis...
When I first started out, I ran a 400watt HPS with a 48" parabolic hood under a 4x4 footprint...with the hood being a vertical hood instead of a horizontal hood I was able to keep the bulb just at 5" above the canopy...and with a little plant rotation I was able to increase my yield to just under a pound...
