How hot is hot? Light adjustment

Ok so right now I have 1 600w aircooled hood. I keep my little battery operated temp gauge at canopy level (top level). It says its about 77* 16 inches away. About 5 inches below that or on the floor or ANYWHERE except DIRECTLY below the center of the light, the tempature goes down a few degrees.

I am convinced I can get my light a lot closer, but am scared to do so.

I've tried the hand test and to me it seems as if it just CANT get to hot for my plants. I can put the back of my hand up inch by inch until I touch the glass. It just doesnt seem hot to me, and my hands burn easy.

I'm convinced this vortex can let me get my lights A LOT closer, and im not sure what tempature (room tempature of canopy level tempature) I should be going by.

How come I can't seem to spell tempature? :X

Useing the old back of the hand test has never really worked fer me. It's misleading. The only real way is to keep dropping it until you see it's starting to bleach the chlorophyll out of the top leaves. This takes -several- days, so go slow! Every time you make an ajustment, ya need ta give it a few days. Also, this distance will be different from one reflector to another. Jus go slow, good luck! My :2cents: hope it helps. BC

Thanks for the input B.C, although my temperatures vary daily, as i have passive intake system sucking in air from outside the room air through the lights out the room.

I just try to keep it where its not hot.
