How good do duct mufflers work?

pretty well

downside is that the inside is a soundproofing material and im sure a breeding ground for mold bacteria and other nasties

one that people might not think exists otherwise

I am not sure if naming companies is allowed, but is this thread about a sales email from today?

How long can these last?

Wow 90$ is what they wanted! After looking at it I passed I could make a superior unit for 1/4 the price

Yeah, make your own! My exhaust is silent. Trash can, steel mesh and some glass wool.

I made something very similar to this. Looks like the exact same thash can. Used welded wire to make a "cone" inside the can and wraped the cone with poly fill. I mated the can to a 8" to 10" (duct) reducer and hooked the reducer to a 8" vortex.

Already had the welded wire (scrog screen), can was on sale (home depot) for $10 and about $10 for the poly fill.

Coulda used fiberglass insulation for the sound deadener (if using this in an exhause application) but I'm using this for an intake fan into my lung room so I went with the more expensive and (probably) less effective poly fill.

Overall pleased with the performance for the $20 and an hour of time spent on the project.

I reckon if you put a muffler on a whisperline you would probably hear nothing at all. :)
