How far should my light be?

Ok just quick question doing a indoor auto grow while I got and out door grow going, I was just wondering how far should my light be away from the plants? I have just germinate them today and I have put my ballast at 275w, and when they get a bit bigger I will increase the lighting to 600w when they get to flower. At the moment they are about 2ft and 5 inches away from the pots, that's as close as I can get them at this moment.

I use the 'back of my hand' method.

I move my hand just above the canopy for a minute and feel how warm and intense the light is.
If it feels uncomfortable, to strong or reflects to hard on my hand then I raise the lights or dim the ballast. I also check for 'hot spots' where the light might be concentrated.

I also check the leaves for light stress. Taco/cano-ing, bending, clawing, brown dry spots, bleaching,...etc.

No need for the plant to give it a Desert climate.
