How far away can digging be heard?

Obviously there are many different variables that can affect this, such as winds, wildlife, etc. But, in general, on a calm day how far away do you think digging can be heard?

One of my potential spots next year is on a mountaintop about 300 yards away from some houses and I was wondering if they'd be able to hear me digging holes if it was a calm day?

Dig when not wanting to be heard. Colder days. The fall before you plant. Night time.

Ppl r so disconnected with nature, it is lucky for them not to have shit in their ears and a screen in their face keeping them distracted.

When loud ,only do so when you can be minimally heard. Be quiet when you know they can listen. Be non-existent in the day. Be swift like the wind.

Low humidity is your friend .
Sound travels through moist air better . No digging in rain showers .

Do not be rhythmical . A few strikes broken up by a rest , then 1 big strike . No patterns for people to home in on .
Also try to stay down wind from the houses as wind carries sound as well .

Thanks for sharin

dig out in the rain lol no one else will be wandering around and the rain will mask the sounds... unless your using machinery or hitting rocks a lot I wouldn't worry

Humans evolved to walk on two legs and have binocular vision. We have better vision than many other mammals. Our ears suck if they can't see you then your golden.

Don't worry about them hearing you unless you using a motorized hole auger.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm not super worried about it now, but it never hurts to be cautious.

And idk about digging in the rain, out here when it rains it typically pours. And digging in storms is not only a bitch due to added water weight, but also much easier to leave tracks.

It depends on what you are digging in. If it's loamy with no rocks, then nobody will notice. If it's hard and rocky and you have to use a pickaxe, well that clink carries.
