How early have you found pre-flowers?

Shmavis

I have never experienced this before. Distinguishable pre-flowers at roughly thirty days from seed... I’m vegging 18/6...

I am a little concerned. The male’s sacs look more like the onset of flowering, than they do pre-flowers. Big balls for pre-flower.

I had intended to veg for another four weeks, minimum. It’s generally at the end of that veg when I find pre-flowers - I always veg until they show.

Am I in trouble here?

Thanks.

I found pre flowers on Chimera's African Jack at about 4.5 weeks from seed, visible to the naked eye, I was like wtf?
Usually I need a little hand held scope to see them but these were huge.
I kept two as moms, they have been fine, I put it down to vigour.

Allright, thanks guys. I appreciate it.

I have honestly never seen 'em this early. My routine has babies in SOLO cups for roughly the first thirty or so days and then I transplant into one gallon for veg under MH. These were transplanted Friday morning... didn't notice pre-flowers during the transplant, 'cause I wasn't looking. Next morning (yesterday) I saw 'em. And was like you window, WTF!?!? :)

It is Chimera's Jack Pine.

I had a DMP seed that showed male parts after its first full set of leaves

That's crazy. But it makes me feel much better about what i"m seeing.

Like window, it was the visibility to the naked eye that shocked me. I wasn't even looking when I found them. I saw the male without looking for it, and was thinking no way... then I spotted the girl. The rest are showing too but not so obvious.

Boy, by the time I complete veg these babies ought to be ready to explode into flower!

I have one out of five that won't show.
14 weeks? They all sprouted around July 20. Three are female and I culled a male, what gives? Odds say its male but....

In your case its opposite, that's great! Eager beavers. I wonder if they'll finish sooner too. What strain do you know?

Jack Pine Shmavis? Let us know how you get on with those bro, heard they are real stinky.
Perhaps the early pre flower is a Jack trait?

No sign after fourteen weeks? That’s really odd. Guess I could have worse problems. :)

Will do. Got a new Can 66 to fight the funk! As long as I don’t fubar this, I’ll be sharing some pics once I’m in flower. I’ll need some guidance from you Chimera enthusiasts. ;)

I’m really hoping to find a girl that lives up to the claim that this is the one to turn to for insomnia when all others fail... if I can find one like that then I’ll be happy, but if I find one that adds strong pine smell & flavor to that effect... well then I’ll be in heaven...

Once I read your post I also wondered about it being a trait of Jack. Thanks for sharing!

#7. I had so hoped that #7 would be lucky #7. But dammit, it’s a boy! I dig the heavy serration — might have to collect some pollen.

Thanks folks!

So, I underatand what pre-flowers are, but what does it mean?

I am relatively new to growing cannabis. Does seeing pre-flowers signify to you, the grower, that it's time to flip them to flower?

What would happen if you just kept them in veg and allowed those pre-flowers to continue to develop?

Thanks!

If the plant is photo period (not autoflower) preflowers will only develop so far under 18/6 light.. the plant will need more darkness per day to start to fully develop...most plants will accept 18/6 as veg, but I have found Indica leaning strains tend to throw a few pistils under that light, while the Sativa leaning plants will stay full on veg mode mostly

Preflowers not only show sex but they also can show the plant has reached maturity to flower. Some plants don’t show preflowers under those lighting schedules though. I’ve always taken into account the number of nodes, at least 6 or 7. Most people keep them in veg to increase size and yield, but a caution to male preflowers…they can throw pollen.

Thanks for the information guys.

Betterhaff, how do I know how long to veg then? I am a little over a week into my first grow and have always been a little unsure of this part. Seems like a lot of things are going on around that time, topping, LST'ing, ScrOG'ing, nutes, yada, yada, yada.

I have a grow diary in the grow diaries section. Feel free to stop by and check things out. If not, I am growing Strawberry Kush and am on Day 10 of veg.

THANK YOU!

It depends on your set up, space, and goals. You have a ways to go, you want to grow at least 30 to 45 days from seed before flip. The longer you veg the bigger the plant. You also have to remember the plant will at least double in size in flower and depending on variety even quite a bit more.

I am doing two Strawberry Kush in a 2x4x7 foot tent. Finishing pots will be 5 gallon Smart Pots.

I guess since it's my first grow, I just want to prove to myself that the quality will be better than anything I have, unfortunately had to buy on the street/black market. Secondly, some quantity would be nice. Just to be able to have something to tide me over till the next two are done (I am currently vegging and flowering in the same tent. Hope to have a veg location setup by the end of the year. Funds are a little low at the moment).

I was originally thinking 4 weeks to veg, but I am already well into week 2 and they seem tiny. Maybe these last two weeks will really explode.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for sidetracking the thread...

I had a Peak Northern Berry throw pistils at the 4th node under 24 hour lights, about 2 weeks old. And I've seen plants that hadn't shown any sex after 3 weeks of 12/12.

Earliest preflower i've seen is 12 days from seed pop, 24/0 veg light cycle. I've never had any strain take longer than 5 weeks from seed pop and those are few. Most show by week 4 veg and i expect to start finding preflowers emerging at 3 weeks from seed pop on the majority of strains. I topped my current grow early (usually don't top or top late) and they seemed to show a bit late (4 weeks) when usually slh shows before week 4. I've posted this or similar for 15+ years and am still amazed how many people get mad (because they don't believe?) saying it takes much longer. I can see the prefloer with the naked eye and then confirm with my eyelupe. When the stipule starts to lean out, that's usually the location to look and an indication preflowers are coming.
I topped my current grow (8 plants) at the fourth node (early like i said), and they are showing sex on the 5th node, first node of new split tops.
Growing indoors and trying to keep females in high light and reducing footprint in veg by outing the males is quite important. Don't you hate wasting time, energy and prime lighting on males you will toss? I usually put them to the outside of the grow until all the plants show. Which is week 4 veg under 18/6 or 24/0 having not topped or trained, that may alter the preflowering time a bit?
