How do you reliably "rate" your produce long term?

Howdy folks,

My question to you, aside from your methods is this:
In the long term, say one breeds a cross, then breeds out those seeds (F1?), then crosses those again and grows the F2s(?). Then is extremely pleased and backcrosses some of those F2s, say twice.

Now just from this we are talking... depending on the strains involved I suppose... a timeframe of 1-2 years?

How do you make your testing results reliable over such a timeframe???

I mean stuff cures in one form or another. Personally I want to try the freezer cure and see if that helps in making results comparable over longer periods of time.

Either way, my point being: Bud from the S1(?) plants would likely be several years cured by the point it could be compared to the F2 bx2.

I assume for reliable testing, a cut of the S1 or certain stages of the backcross would have to be flowered on occasion to provide a fresh testing "base" ?

Otherwise, comparing 3 month cured F2 bud to 9 months cured S1 bud seems silly...

Testing through lab would be preferable and eliminate this conundrum but seems impossible for many of us (eu).

I've only been as far as f2's. I keep mothers/cuts around of the mother used for the cross. Then if not the first round, the second flowering of the f2's I flower the mother at the same time. For instance I made Strawberry Dogshit f2's. Planted 3 seeds and they all turned out to be female. Flowered them all once, and then flowered all of them, along with the Strawberry Dogshit mother. Kept the one I liked best out of the 3(#3), along with the mother.

If the differences are subtle enough then it comes down to how long can I smoke it till I am sick of it or it doesn't tickle me the same way.

With today's variety fewer people take this path but back when genes were few and far between this was the final measure of it's overall value to me. I mean smoking nothing but the same weed to. IMHO the best of the best genes done right never get that boring that they don't do well in a test like this and of course it is subjective.

Nice guys, good info, thanks!

So either flower the S1 cuts alongside the progeny to compare children to parents or go weird's way and go for "smoke nothing but one and decide if it tickles you long term or becomes boring/old or whatever".

Sounds like good points to start!
