How do I keep my mother from getting so BIG?

Hey guys and gals,I have been having some trouble keeping my mother plant at a reasonable size.I have heard of cutting the roots back but am not sure how to do that without killing her!! I veg in a closet that is 2x3x8 with two T5 flouros and do not feed her that often.I would like to keep her is a 1 gallon pot but after time she starts to get root bound and problems start,so I just keep transplanting.Anyone with ideas or methods of trimming roots to keep her managable?Thanks

If you find it to be too much of a hassle you can always just cut a couple clones and choose one as a new mom
