I believe if you planted it 3 or 4 ft. deep, the rootball would get no oxygen that deep in the ground...and the stalk would rot..
If your purpose is to keep it short so it's not so noticeable, I would plant the rootball sideways in a large mound of good soil and tie the long stalk down, parallel to, but just above the ground. The top of the plant will turn and start growing upwards within a few days..
not sure how deep you could get away with planting that, I'd plant it at an angle if height is an issue. You would have to come up with some sort of support system that would anticipate the growth you will get though. edit; Bud beat me to it..
Holy! Legs for days! I agree with the above guy. Bury it at an angle, on tilt, with the tops a foot off the ground, Tie it, and you could even screen it and allow it to grow up into the screen.
I also think burying at an angle is a good idea - specifically I would dig and amend a hole as usual for the rootball, then lay the plant on its side, and create a mound that covers most of the bare stems with soil. Make sure you you spread the branches so that they grow a bit away from each other, and pin them down. Cover with a bit more soil for good measure.
Those branches will form a mass of roots after a few weeks as long as they stay a few inches below the surface, and that zone is kept moist enough. Mulching is probably a good idea.
I did a similar thing a few years back (see link in sig: Blowfish/Trainwreck S1s and Taskenti), and had great results. I'm also layering a plant this year. I would post pics, but I've run out of room! Only need a few more posts to get more room...
you could try putting rooting hormone on the stem and then covering the stem in damp black cloth until the stem grows roots, like cloning it without cutting it. Would be a little bit of science experiment. Why grow that plant? Why does it need to be buried deep? Why does it look like that? That picture begs so many questions.
I would take as many clones from it as you can until nothing is left, discard the remains, and plant the clones. That plant looks kinda hideous and is probably rootbound and will likely take a while to snap out of transplant shock not to mention hardening off for intense sunlight.
When flowering time comes you will most likely end up with a bigger healthier plant from the clones than that hideous beast.
I believe that i would knock some holes for the roots to escape through in that pot and just plant pot and all , but not below its current soil line . tie the branches down , does the lower stalk show any sign of wanting to reveg ? You can cut the root and move the pot into another pot at the end of this season , maybe it will have enough reveged undergrowth for a root trimming and short topping by then .
