How big of pots for SOG grow?

I've grown several SCROG grows with 2 gal square pots, but I'm wondering how small I can get away with on SOG, to make room for more plants. I am growing under 400W HPS. I currently have about 30 plants in red jiffy 16 oz cups but I'm pretty sure they will need more dirt than that. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

the rule is usually 1 gal for 1 foot of plant height.. so you might be able to get away with 2gal, when i did the sea of green i did 3 gal grow bags not filled all the way up.. so probably about 2 gallons should do nicely

good luck..

cut the tops off of half gallon milk jugs, or 2 liter pop bottles... unless you are trying to grow huge plants, you won't need more dirt than that...

i'm not 'usual' ...

I have 5.5" x 5.5" x 8" tall water bottles that have had the tops cut off, they hold about 3.9 litres each or a little over 1 gallon, not including pot size I grow 20" tall plants in my chest of drawers and probably the same under HPS in my wardrobe, 15 in the drobe, 12 in the chest of drawers :)

Yea that "rule of thumb" went out for me long ago, especially when I found out most 1 gal nursery containers are only .6 gal.I can and do veg my plants to 28-30 inches in nursery 2 gal which are only 1.6 gal before transplanting up to 3 gal to flower.I believe timing is as important as container size for utilization of all available soil.Veg until the rootball has totally filled your starting container,I know its time to transplant when I'm having to water every other day.I grow 8-10 inch cuts in little 4 inch pots before going to my 2 gal normally. You'll only need 25% more soil to get you through the stretch and bloom of 12/12,its best to do your transplant and go immediately to 12/12.The largest I'd go with a sog style grow would be a 1 gal nursery container,a square 5.5 inch would be even better if you can score them. The thing is to start in a small 4 inch container or 12 ounce cup and let the rootball fill that sucker.

maybe try using a planting bed if that's possible for your space, you can pack em in there

How about 3 containers 30" long 6" deep and about 6" wide. Do you all think I could get 30 girls in those or would that be too tight? They are self watering containers that you fill the bottom reservoir and the water comes up from the bottom to draw those roots down.

Hey everyone, this may be old news, but I found this great website that sells everything cheap, including square pots, they also have fast shipping. I was looking at the 6x6x7 square pots for my next experiment. Check these guys out at the link in my signature.

Peace,

ive been wondering this for a while too
so for this run i have decided to veg in 5 ltr pots and use the pot on pot method with another 5ltr pot below for flowering. room is also a issue for me , ive got the height but not much floor space

Hey Pimp Aurora, I checked out your site. Looks like it is a good site except it does't catter to the USA. At least I didn't see that as an option in the check out menu. The site I recommend is located in Ohio. Cheap shipping to the USA. They also carry a large variety of brands and do have very cheap, but yet the perfect fit for square pots.
They have pretty decent prices on Fox Farm products, Botanicare products, pots, and lighting was reasonable from my experience.
I don't know, basically it all depends where ya live and what your looking for. But in general, plant lighting has a good general selection, with popular brands, and good prices for the USA.

If ya want a good set of pots that are easy to use and good space savers for a SOG set up. Square 6X6X7 10 count w/ shipping $16.73, fox farm OFO soil 1.5 cu ft 35.33 shipped to your door. These prices seem to be pretty fair in the USA.

Good luck,
