good luck. sounds like you either have to use exhaust fans and make some shade or get some air conditioners. i have never used a greenhouse before, but i bet a desert makes one crazy hot

you can use smaller than normal fans if you just build swampcoolers........
but then you need water.......which I'm pretty sure isn't exactly readily available

i got a solar powered exhaust fan (typically used for attics) at lowe's. it was like 300 bones but it seems to be helping quite a bit.

For greenhouses there is a white coating that u can put on the windows to cool it downb , but i don't know why u would use a Gh in the desert>?

I would assume that there might be sand blowing around as an issue. That was one of the main reasons my buddies out in yucca used a GH. A gh will work great as long as you can keep your plants watered a lot. A shade cover with misters on will also help a ton. Those solar fans like someone stated above is a great option as well.

the main reason for the green house was to conceal my plants from my incredibly nosey neighbor (and to protect from could nights in the early and late stages of the grow season.) i also grow vegetables around the greenhouse which has kept my real garden incog.

I live in S Cali inland too. You can buy a shade cloth and place it on the roof. With my GH I open the door during the day and I did set up a regular old house fan to blow in there. Come July - Aug you want to check the soil daily because they can on the hot dry days need daily watering. You also want to not have young plants in there during the summer and older plant can take it but the babies can't.

You can replace your plastic cover with a material called Agribon floating row cover. Its a breathable polyester that comes in different thicknesses. The lightest one allows 90% light transmission and breaths nicely. The material also gives some frost protection. And yep its not transparent.

yes you have to replace the air inside 10 times per hour minimal. A torin is perfect:yeahthats

in the back u see my 1000 kubic meter per hour torin in an airtight and bugproof box i also mix the air with an oscillating fan , i took a window out of the greenhouse , the door is open , the ventilation windows are open .

So it gets around 40 degrees celsius when sun shines(and it's around 22-25 degrees celsius outside) , without ventilation it gets even hotter.

Thats still hot , i am gonna buy that white wash stuff

if its possible to remove individual sheets of glass then i would remove some of them from the roof and perhaps a pane from ground level somewhere opposite the door. if you can get some cooler air coming in low down and the warm flowing out of the top it helps!

you can buy louvre vents that replace sheets of glass so you could replace a ground level sheet or two with these.

good luck

If you have water for plants, you have water for a swamp cooler/evaporative cooler. You can very easily make your own for dirt cheap and they work fantastic in the desert due to low humidity levels. Not only that, you can use it very effectively to chill nutrient solutions in desert conditions.

They use very little electricity as well. Heres just a few examples.

This one can be made for less than $50 and will drop the temps up to 30 degrees in low humidity conditions.

I built my own using

a 55 gallon barrel $15
two AC filter pads $8 total
water pump from walmart $25
and an old fan I used for indoor grows.

When temps get hot, this thing is a life saver. Plants perk up and point their leaves up when she is turned on.

Swamp coolers work ok in low humidity locations (15-20% Rh or less) but the first time it raims and the humidity goes up, that swamp cooler just turned into a swamp - with dam little cooling - and a cooked garden is not a happy garden.

I've fought temps every summer for many - MANY years and finaly this year I threw in the towel and installed an air conditioner.

On the bright side,, (pun intended) I added another 1000W light with air cooled hoods, so between the two - the added electrical bill shoule be interestiing.

You can also try to get some shade cloth. It gets that hot in my GH in July and Aug I have to water daily but they do handle the heat.
