horizontal bulb, vertical operation?

P

machine:
400 w sunmaster warm ("horizontal" bulb). horizontal fixture w/ affixed to hood.

question:
usually run bare bulb vertical w/ no hood/no cool tubes, etc.

will there be a problem taking fixture out of hood, and running "horizontal" bulb, and "horizontal"ly designed base/fixture vertically?

thx b4 hand 4 responses!

Lamps come in 3 types: Horizontal, Vertical and Universal (either H or V) A lamp will work in the "wrong" direction but, will fail sooner from overwork. Believe it or not, it ties in with Earth's polarity. H and V lamps are set to arc in a particular direction. When they fail to find home in it's promised location, they go searching. The lamp that works twice as hard burns but half as long.

Not only does the bulb have to burnt in the correct position, Horizontal or Vertical. But the Horizontal arc tube have a nipple on them that needs to be towards the ceiling. Otherwise like previous posted said you're just wasting a good bulb.

the instructions state that the notch in the metal threads should be @ 9 o'clock. that seems to be the key orientation.

so the bulb's orientation design is for 9 oclock.

may just remove hood, and lower bare bulb light to center of plants - horizontally. should be doable to make sure socket assembly/bulb remains in manufacturers' recommended 9 o'clock position.

not fan of hoods. seems can just create positioning/orientation of 9 o'clock/maintain horizontal fixation, while removing hood and getting @ least 270* of light. will be in middle of 2 1k's, so really 'side lighting' anyway.

in the past, have just hung 1k's bare bulb - regardless of orientation/manufacturers specs, etc. new bulbs frequently. but if bulb life can be extended, should be.

thx for the informative responses. nice help!

uhhh ... you sure on that? The alternate name for a vertical lamp is "base up" which would point the nipple down.

Hey FB
You are talking base up which is not the same as horizontal. Suggest you take a better look at the ARC tube of the bulb(horizontal), it should be "D" shaped with the little nipple up.
The proper socket to use is a POMB(position oriented mogul base), it should be clocked so the little pin is at the nine o'clock position.
