Hops and the aroma of Miss Mary Jane

I cracked open a bottle of Heineken a few minutes ago. I left the room, and upon returning, wondered why it smelled faintly like marijuana.

Turns out the beer was putting out aromas that were similiar to some of the earthy outdoor dank bud I was sampling this past week.

Coincidence? Maybe not. I have read that the hops plant (which is an ingredient in beer) is closely related to marijuana in the plant kingdom.

I wonder if some of the same chemicals are in both, that contribute to that aroma.

The hop is one of only two genera in the family of Cannabaceae, the other being cannabis (also known as hemp).

And that commercial of the president of Samuel Adams (disgusting "beer", most American beer is :pointlaug ) where he takes a handful of hops, rubs his hands together and buries his face in and inhales deeply...that has to smell great. Hell, looks similar to bud.

The seeds look familiar, too.

I've already noticed that a few times with Heineken, but not with other beers. Over here, Heineken bottles labels read something like "only natural products have been used in the brewing of this beverage"... hence the nice smell? I can't compare it much to other beers because we don't have many different beers, Heineken is about the best you can buy over here.

Peace

I noticed this about Heineken in a pool hall a couple of years ago. Also may be the reason that beer gets "skunky" when left in the heat. Ever left your chron in the heat?
Depending on the type, mine has been VERY skunky at times.

ok. ive tried hops in powdered form. I'v tried taking about 12 grams of powdered hops grams orally, and got a slight sedative effect, absolutely nothing to rave about. And I smoked 3 bowls of hops and it burned like fuck, the taste was ok, people complain aobut the taste of it smoking, but it didn't get me high at all, not even close. It's a waste of time, don't even try to get high off it or even think about it, a waste of time for stoners to live seriously. Theres a reason why its legal. This thread should be closed, hops is a fucking disgrace. seriously. The only effect i got out of smoking hops, was a massive amount of paranoia on the second bowl. After inhaling a shit load of smoke after the third, i just gave up. Its a waste of time i can't stress it enough.

Sincerely,

Coop

P.S. Dont even think about smoking valerian root or st.john wort, another waste of time, dont even think about trying to get high off them by ingesting them. The only legal herb that is worth it which is at www.thekratomking.com is Kratom. Red Thai, Pie Resin, or PGN.

You know, I don't think anyone was thinking of smoking hops, or any of the "in the name of science" bullshit you tried. This thread is just about the fragrant similarities between hops & weed, given it's familial relationship. Not sure where you get off dumping on the thread. Oh well...

It was a valid response as it related to the thread until that part. Just noticing there are similarities in the odor might have people asking the question "How far do the similarities go?" That question was answered for us, right here.

By the way, I've always wondered what it smells like in that Sam Adams commercial. Where can I get hops to rub all over my hands like that?

You either have shit for tastebuds or you are straight up crazy, Sam Adams is in my top 3 favorite beers, its the bomb!
I rarely buy any European beers any more, why buy something shipped that far? Fresh is the idea, buy your local Micros and craft brews and you will find many you like. Perhaps you live in a area with no good local regional brews? Perhaps I am just spoiled with the variety of good beers brewed in Oregon, Washington and California, good local beers is a big deal here on the west coast.

Anyways, I find your broad statement on American beer offensive and unenlightend :bat: (but I'll forgive you this time). Looks like I need to open another Sammys!

Find your local Homebrewing shop, I find the variety called "Cascade" to be very pungent, and I use them often in my homebrews.

The varieties Koch(prez of Sam Adams) is rubbing in his face are called "Hallertau" and "Tettenager", both are classic German hops, and he purchases them from growers in Germany.

Also the Hops smelling shown in the commercials is actually the way Hops are evaluated buy potential buyers, its not just ment to be comical.

Hell, just go to my home state of Idaho where they grow tons of hops. You will see huge fields of them hanging from string tied to stakes. The variety grown in S. Idaho is Greenburg, known for a fruity flavor with a touch of woodiness. The Cascade that Backcountry likes was developed at U. of Oregon. I think that both Hallertau and Tettenager are Noble Hops, the 4 varieties that are low in bitterness and high in aroma. Hops have been grown near the Hallertau region of Germany since A.D. 736 and Germany still leads the world in the production of hops. Backcountry could just drive to the Willamette Valley and get all the hops he wants. And yes, Sam Adams has good beer, my sons favorite.

Especially heineken and becks and every beer that tastes relatively bitter has a lot hops in it and it really smells like weed when you open the bottle.
My friends think Im crazy but its true.

You dont see hops fields very often I think that is because it is hard to grow or at least other crops are easier to grow.

Hops need good climates to grow in, I am aware of the Willamette valley hop farms, but it used to be even bigger in the Rogue valley, closer to home. Grants pass used to be a major Hops region, and if you look at the names of newer Hops varieties you will notice that a majority of them feature place names from all over the PNW, like "Willamette", "Santiam", "Yakima", and "Cascade".

I find Cascades to have a good citrus aroma similar to a good Afgani hybrid.

Once I have time to put in a fenced garden specificly for Perrinial(sp?) plants, I intend to grow all my own Hops.

My grandfather used to own several sheep ranches around the Rogue River area before he moved to the Malheur River area. I never knew that there were hops in the Rogue area. Idaho, Oregon and Washington are probably the 3 main growing areas in the U.S.I think that both Oregon and Washinton have Idaho beat in that regard, but you can't beat our spuds.

Backcountry, did you know that Idaho farmers will not sell a 5 pound bag of potatoes. They refuse to cut one in half!
