Potanist....I have used several cool tubes in the past. They are great for heat problems but suck for light distribution. If you've just got a small cab and don't need a big footprint, they're pretty good.I can run a 1000 watt in a 3x5x5 closet with a cool tube, no problem. If you've got a big space you're trying t light up go with the hood style. My two cents..BL

If you space is really small go cool tube. If there is a good amount of space go with the reflector w/ cooling. The light spreads are pretty bad for cooltubes...but if it had those wings im sure it's not too bad :bashhead:

As with most things size the lighting/fixture to fit the grow. I would not use a cool tube if they gave them away, but I would accept them and pass them on to Micro growers to use.

With SMALL cabinets the tubes capabilities, other than providing cooling, is immaterial as the emitted light is confined within a small space and the cabinet walls serve as reflectors.

With LARGE grow areas use what you have. The finished grow will be the gauge of the tubes performance vs. hoods. They do seem to be performing well in stadium grows as has been shown in numerous photo shots posted in the forums.

light distribution footprints are overrated. With 600's you aren't going to get bad coverage unless you have no reflector or a SUPER deep hood. The additional reflector wings on the cooltubes are pretty good , makes it like a batwing reflector with no hot spot. And I love batwings, so simple and they work great.

I pulled 2.5 pounds from two 600s in cooltubes recently, I was able to get the lights very very close by pulling outside cold air through the tubes.

After a year with tubes I am going back to hoods in most cases because if your fan circuit breaks or anything like that, ,if the power goes out and it fucks up the synchronization of fan timer and lights your bulbs will explode.

The best situation for cooltubes is vertical.

ALWAYS have redundant (two, one on each side) fans with cooltube lights and each fan on a different circuit.

during the winter i could get the first tube in a string of three to get cold. 1" away from plants. i used it in vertical lighting and it rocked the room for some big bushes.

here's a picture of the room in early stage of flower, by the middle i had a thrid tube in the middle and two hoods on movers hitting in from the outside. no light lost.
cool tubes are better for sealed room grows like mine was. keep the room cooler so less a/c is needed to regulate temps.

now i grow smaller bushes and use parabolic hoods. still like my bulb vertical, makes more sense when looking over how hps bulb spectrum's break down over distance. I not liking the traditional horizontal CT, reflecting to the top of the reflector and back down, then through glass). it's the littlest details that make the difference. so every siuation is different. there's no "true" best, only better for you. would need to know details to get a better idea of what's for you.

Where's the 'Hybrid' Category? :D

Plus, in a matter of seconds, you can pop it off and go vert!

I choose the Hybrid - best of both worlds, not to mention cheap and easy :rasta:

nice call on the cooltube nite tiger. The room when complete will have a 4x4x8 deminsions there will be another identical cab that i will split it too for moms and veggin but im planing on a 600 watt hps with a digital ballast. The room will be 4pot by 4 pot set up SOG in 3 gal pot. I intend on doing about 10 to 15 bonsai moms too so I can have lots of genetic diversity and have enuff to last me and my fiance and friends so we can all stay out of the black market. and maybe release special underground seed line I just want to cross reefs gsus(g13x godbud)with some sweet tooth and make some sweet jesus.

PS after some further reading in t how the glass can also filter uv light ou ive decide to go hood with and an extra uvb light. and heres for a teaser plant and macro till i have my full cab. its hashberry

2.5lbs is near 1g/w...
did you pull this off with the 600s vertical?
