Homemade Compost

Since I've been a organic veggie gardener for 35 years and believe compost is a gift from the Gods. I'm wondering has anyone had experience with adding homemade compost to their soil mix?

Big Dog-Compost tea great stuff and the veggie garden loves it. However I have beautiful black/aged compost that once it is screened it looks as good as worm castings that you can drop a lot of money on at the garden store. I just wonder why I haven't heard of anyone using their own. It can''t be an issue of being too hot (too much nitrogen) because that is the ratio of the mix. Maybe folks are afraid of nasties but well made compost(proper temps and turning)should be free of problems.

So I screened compost last night and made a small amount of "soil mix" to fill a 5 gal container. Today i plan transplanting a "Jack Frost" clone just as an experiment. Im going to set up a seperate flower area for it and I will keep you posted about results.

If you call taking the stuff straight from the composter and using nothing but that in the pots (cooked it on the grill before using indoors) as "adding homemade compost to their soil mix", then, yes, I've done that.

My compost only has small amounts of rabbit manure in it - the rest is all leaves, weeds, non-meat table scraps (vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells), grass clippings, etc.

The plants did absolutely great. The one time I added a diluted fertilizer mix, they immediately showed burn, so I never did that again.

Worked great, and as long as it's not the dead of winter and my old compost bin isn't frozen, that's what I do (actually, I'm reusing the stuff from an earlier grow until it gets warm).

I'll never do anything else.

hi guys...very interesting(especialy for the bio maniacs as me)...

@freakazoid...that's true man..i use mixing compost every times i make soil mix for my ladies... usually 2 moths after the transplanting in pot with plants..
and i saw the same thing of you...if u add ferts when the soil is too rich ,it probably go to overfert or burning evidences...but my experiences tell me about this fact is real only with CHEMICALS ferts...
when i add to a rich soil some organic100% ferts ,the plants spending two days to come back to normality (flat leaves ..not flexed as in burning)..
u don't think so...
PLUS i add sugar-cane during the watering ...and a microorganism-stimulator maded by milk and sugars in yeast state(*hope is right)....so this stuff make an incredible power of absorbition in the uptaking of nutes, within eliminate the problem of burning so QUICKLY...

hope it's all understandable...i'm totally self-taught man onto learn english..
(proud autodidact)
peace filimagno.......

Filmagno- This micro stimulator idea is very intriguing. My interest in adding compost to my soil mix is to add that micro life to the soil. My experience with organic veggie gardening has taught me that soil is alive, complex and must have balance to be healthy. Soil is an ecosystem unto it's self. Just as I want organic veggies for my body I want my mj to have everything it needs to realize it's fullest potential. :canabis:

Freak- Im lucky I have access to compost year around. In fact the winter means less going into the 3 bins so a perfect time clean them out and screen compost. I take the screened material and store it in vented (a few air holes) 33 gal. trash cans for future use.

Yep, but what I'm saying is that if the bulk of the material that goes into you compost is plant matter and not manure, and it's mature and properly aged/composted/done, you don't have to use it in your "mix"- use straight compost. The plants will return the love, I guarantee it.

My results with tomatoes in containers has also been kick-ass, as well.

I never had anything against chemical fertilizers, but when you can go organic, and it works better, why the hell not?

I agree. What I'm looking for is plant growth at peak rates. My hope is a plant that is happy and perhaps it will not be open to Mites and other pest. What I have observed is that something is missing from the chemical world that plants need thus making them susceptible to all sorts of problems.

hi maddlights...i'm glad to see lot of peoples(including u and me) come back to organic due to the natural way of get plants haelthiest!!!
i agree with u ,especially when u talk about the rejenuvation of the exhaust soils within microflora...
i've talk with a good reasercher here in my country that have combined a mix of nutriebts with his booster...is called ERGOFITO(and is made from sugar-beet and monophosfate of potash)and his booster from milk and sugars yeasted.
he told me that the real one tecnique is to combine ;a source of microbiological activity booster with an organic-mineral fertilisation.. but the most important thing is to add the micro booster in those yeast FORM ; cause the normal sugars and milk,it burns oxigen to the soil for the process of yeasting...so one time those are yeast, the bacteria makes the rest of the work ....----> a quickly fix of nutes to the roots!!!!

....ps:::...i use to add sugar in the first stage of veg ...and the last 2 weeks of flowering.....
