slight background info/rant
I do not have any real reason to protect anything at my house, but I have a friend lately with sticky fingers and now i'm losing sleep over it.

I've had multiple things go missing at my house...stupid petty things, like video games (but not the cases) and such. The other day I had ~$300 in my wallet (basically everything until my next paycheck) and I woke up to just $2. I didn't mind, it was probably karma. THEN the other day I borrowed my father's truck to go to the hardware store (building a miniramp, it's a skateboarding ramp for all you geezers) and someone stole my father's anxiety medication! It makes me think it's my roommates friend, as my father is a 4-time cancer survivor as well as a 7-time heart attack survivor, and noone with half a heart would ever dare do that to my father.

ANYWAYS, I enjoy having company over (no I don't have a grow or anything along those lines, I purely surf this forum for "gossip", knowledge on strains, and because it's intriguing), so I know people are going to say "stop having people over", but if I start going out to hang out with my friends whoever this asshole is is just going to come in and take my glass collection or all the car parts I hoard.

-I want to set up some video cameras. 1 or 2 exterior, and then a few for my bedroom and access points to the house. I've been looking online, but there are so many varying companies and specifications that I'm overwhelmed. A motion sensing object that could text me notifications, that would be cool.
-Reinforcing my doors, preferably without replacing the door frames or doors themselves. I like in a vintage home so i'd like to keep as much intact as possible.
-Something else?? Generally unsure.

Obviously, I have a lot to lose. I would get a simple home security system, but given the fact that I medicate, I don't think it would be a wise decision. Should I ever have the alarm go off, I'd hate to have my local PD walking into my house and discovering my new royal fumescratch rigs.

These products are sold by (at least) two names:

-Security camera:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/300kp-camera-mms-gsm-cdma-digital-home-security-alarm-system-set-101849

-Game camera:
http://www.amazon.com/ScoutGuard-SG...sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1324898220&sr=1-11

I think the difference between the two terms is whether or not it has camo paint. Maybe weather resistance.

Models that don't send the photo by phone but just store it in the camera are much cheaper. They just aren't much help if the camera itself gets stolen too. If the alarm is more important than the photo/"evidence" a cheaper system that has no camera might be an option.

The police come over for things like that over there? At least over here you gotta make a contract with a private security firm.

Thanks for your input.

I was vague with that part you quoted me talking about the cops. I was referring to using a private security firm. I'll try to be more clear in my future posts.

I'm really interested in something with video rather than pictures for certain areas in the house. I'd really love it if someone had input or examples of the quality of what it shows. I'd hate to spend this money to get footage that is useless

Put a lock on your bedroom door, put all your valuables in your bedroom and don't go anywhere with it unlocked.

I'm a hoarder. That would be impossible unless I started hanging things on the walls/ceiling.

Also, locks and such didn't work out well with my 1st apartment. Bunch of junkies ran through my neighborhood all the time...I think that some cameras and a baseball bat will suffice.

You can get ones that do video too but even more expensive...

Plenty of reviews online for example here: http://www.chasingame.com/

I think a $50 dollar trail cam would b perfect for ya, we use em around these parts for deer hunting, and some use em for security, as posted above just b careful where u place it.

Your webcam and a couple trail cams will do you just fine. Just make sure you don't put them somewhere like a kitchen. Way to much movement.

Logitech Indoor Security Cameras should do what you want.

also, put like white powder on the floor, and if you can back and there is footprints you'll know someone was there. I learned it from movies like home alone. It should work.
