Not exactly, it was offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, but we damn sure felt the fucker!!!
I was watching TV in bed at about 11 am, and the bed started shaking. Now, it felt just like when one of my cats is under there and decides to scratch, so I instinctivly grabbed my flashlight and checked under the bed, fully prepared to drag a furball out from under.
No cats.
I paused, and thought, "What the hell....?"
The bed was still shaking. I wasn't touching it. There were no animals in the room.
I dropped the flashlight and ran out in the hall, damn near slammed into my mom. Her eyes were bugged out, and I said, "Did you feel that?" She said, "Yeah, what the hell was that??"
I said, "I'm not sure, but I think we just had a fucking earthquake....."
"No way, this is Florida, we don't get earthquakes down here. Do we?"
Damn near ALL the pictures hanging on the walls, except for the heavy ones, are now hanging crooked as fuck in this place. Hell, I even took pictures (on film, don't have a digital anymore)
We ran through the possibilities of what could have caused that kind of rattling. There was no sonic boom, so no super sonic jets went through. No planes took off from the airport in the area. No large vehicles (and no vehicles period) went through the neighborhood. So by logical deduction, we figured an earthquake was the only reasonable explaination.
I tried calling my best friend, got her hubby on their cell, he was driving and didn't notice anything. They live about 35-40 miles south, and I was wondering if they felt it, too. She was asleep, so I know damn well she didn't feel anything. A nuke could drop through the ceiling and she'd sleep through it.
So I hung up and called my older brother 5 miles away. I asked him if he felt any shaking in the past few minutes, and he said, "Hell yeah, everything rattled in here! I think we had an earthquake!" Then his cell promptly dropped the call. Damn cell phones
So I called my hubby's cell and left a message asking him to call me back on his lunch break.
Then my younger brother called from MI, and I told him, "Dude, I think we had a freakin' earthquake a while ago!"
"Bullshit, you live in Florida, you don't get earthquakes."
"The hell we don't! THAT was a god damn earthquake."
"You're so full of shit. I'm going to check the USGS site, though..............Oh fuckin' shit, you DID have an earthquake! A 6.0 about 250 miles out! Fucking creepy, dude......"
"HA! I KNEW it! I knew that's what that was!"
Then my older brother called back, and I answered call waiting and he said the same thing, "Fuck, we did have an earthquake, 6.0 250 miles out in the gulf! Shit, man!" (He got on the same site)
Then the call was dropped again. So my mom called her best friend and played phone tag for a few minutes before catching eachother. THEN my hubby called during lunch, so she hung up on her friend, and I talked to him.
"You didn't by chance feel any shaking over there, did you?"
"Hon, I work on mold presses, EVERYTHING shakes here."
"Well, here's a newsflash for you. Florida had a 6.0 'quake about an hour ago."
"You are SO full of shit, Florida doesn't get earthquakes."
Gee, that seems to be a running theame, lol, Florida doesn't get earthquakes.
"My brothers checked out the site that tracks that shit, we had a fuckin' earthquake, hon, I'm not kidding!"
"Jesus fucking christ, if I wanted earthquakes I'd live in California, dammit, I don't want those here!"
"Well, just thought you'd like to know the absolute oddball news of the day. Let everyone else know in there, it's kinda big news on the local stations right now."

Earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico
Scientist say quake probably too shallow and weak to cause tsunami
By CATHY ZOLLO
[email protected]
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake was detected in the Gulf of Mexico, about 250 miles west-southwest of Bradenton this morning and was felt by people from Texas to Florida.
It is the strongest quake in that area since seismologists began detecting them in the early 1970s.
Officials at the U.S. Geological Survey said that while the shallow thrust fault quake is the type that can produce tsunami waves, the power of the quake didn’t raise much concern.
“We simply don’t know if it is (tsunami producing), but it’s unlikely given the magnitude of the earthquake,” said Harvey Benz, scientist in charge of the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
The quake occurred at 10:56 Eastern Daylight Time about 250 miles west-southwest of Bradenton, and is in the same area with a magnitude of 5.2 that occurred Feb. 10.
The last one detected before that was April 13, 2002 that registered a magnitude 3.2.
Benz said the USGS has detected relatively infrequent earthquakes in the region since 1973, but most have been in the magnitude 3 range.

6.0 earthquake ... here??
BY: DAVID KARNES, CHIEF METEOROLOGIST
There was a tremor in North Sarasota County as a result of a rare 6.0 magnitude earthquake that ocurred 250 miles WSW of Bradenton. The tremor was also felt here at the SNN / Herald Tribune building by me.
I noticed lightly swaying lights and cameras and felt my chair and the floor swaying as well.
