Hole in Stem?

A friend of mine was showing me something weird in his latest grow - a hole in one of the stems. I told him it was probably in the process of healing itself after the stem broke, but honestly that was just a guess. Anyone have any other ideas?

Sometimes rodents will nibble base of stem in search for water

I had this on outside crop tops wilting lower half of plant fine a small hole was spotted ,
i cut plant of just below it found the the grub eating the pithy part of inside stem
about 20 plants affected
became 20 shorter bushes.

Damn! Better tell him to check into it. He did find a rat's nest behind the shed in his yard but for some reason I never suspected it could be rodents - my mind immediately just goes to bugs if anything. Thanks for the heads up, guys!

I also had some stem boring grub od in Spain, entered near the ground, killed the whole plant a month or 2 later.

plug it with some neem oil, best to assume a bug has got in..?

Yeah, cold-pressed neem oil could do the trick.
