Holding clones in stasis? (the refrigerator method)

aka "Subcooled Cuttings"

The crisper drawer and a ziploc bag will provide a suitable stasis* chamber for fresh cuttings for up to around 6..7..8 weeks.
(*Stasis= maintaining a constant level...Stable state...dormant)

In order to obtain this sort of longevity in the fridge, the bag containing the dry**, unrooted branches should be opened to breathe at least once a week,better yet,twice a week. Partially puff the bag before sealing with your breath...
Cuttings that are kept in the refrigerator this way actually will root faster than conventional non-refrigerated cuttings once they are removed from the coolness of the refrigerator on up to a point of about 2 or 3 weeks, which at that time they will take proceed to take longer to root and you may even just lose a few.
Important: When they are removed from the refrigerator to be rooted, be sure to recut the stem.

The holding of cuttings in "fridge stasis" opens the door to many possibilities such as... testing many different males, holding strains while evaluating, changing the way you time your mothers,... etc..

**When we take clones they go in marked thick freezer bags with a mist of water but not to much.-Subcool

That method has worked well for many, but you dont need a fridge, plastic or stasis to keep cuttings for that long

This group of different sized cuttings sat in plain water for six weeks and would have gone longer if I had let them.

one thing to remember is that yours are rooted.

a unrooted clone is plant matter not a plant.

there for can not be counted as a plant in case of a raid.
as i use the refrigerator to hold clone for me. im a med user and only able to have 6 plant's.

flower 6 and have clone for next round ready no need for mothers

also I.M. Boggled great thread i have been using this for a long time now. one thing i would like to add..( 6.7-8 weeks) is only the start......heheh i have had them up to 2 months and still root for me.

just so everyone clear on this..... the steams must be in water & the leaf's out of water. i just use tap water. no need to ph

Interesting point. Being fully illegal makes it easier I guess, in a twisted sort of way. Still, as far as keeping genetics in a form of stasis for use months later, leaving them in a cup of water is a viable option. It's even easy to set up a nearly maintenance free way of doing it.

the frig keeps things very cold, what kind of temps are going to be in the drawer?? this info would be helpful, I don't mind trying the frig method post those temps & humidity when you get some time.

Oh, sure you can take cuttings in flower. All the way up to harvest, in fact. It's an ugly way of growing at first, but eventully you will have a fuly revegged plant that will throw out more clones than you know what to do with.

This is after several weeks of 24/0 lighting, a thorough flush and light N feeding

After the three main stalks are taken for cuttings, the lower growth explodes. You can clearly see the bud pieces being grown out in this pic.

Putting Clone’s In Stasis?


Well here it is folks, after reading the refrigerated clone stasis theory, I decided to give it a try, so here’s what I did…..

1. I waited until the second week of flowering because I have found that the clones seem to root faster if there’s not as much N, in the solution, the stems were medium/soft when the clones were taken, I used a sharp clean razor blade (new never been used, btw imo I don’t think that it’s a good idea to reuse old blades) to take the cuttings with, I believe you would be just asking for trouble.

2. As you can see I used a one gallon Ziploc bag to put them in, I also put about two inches of water in the bottom of the bag, (Tap-Water).

3. I then put them in the bottom of my refrigerator, I will not reopen them until one mouth later. Hint: it may be a good idea to reopen them once a week and just breath into the bag.

Like I said, I took 25 clones from the very best looking plants that I had……The resin for this is to do an experiment on my next grow….I’m going to put eighteen of the very best looking clones from a clone in one system and eighteen of the best from a seed mother plant clones, I am looking to see which one will give me better high/yield ratio.

I grow in a 36 Recirculating DWC Bio-Bucket System, but they are broke up into two separate systems, there are eighteen recirculating dwc bio-buckets in one system and eighteen in the other, for a grand total of 36.

Excellent thread and great information! Shit, I was wondering wear to keep clones, I live in a studio apartment, and I keep my mothers under my kitchen flouros on my sink countertop, I would really love more room to do dishes!

Hey can anyone state what temp range is good for the fridge to put clones in stasis?

I mean can someone who has done it stick a thermo in there - I plan to do this and want to calibrate my fridge ahead of time with my high/low thermo.

Great thread guys, I have a butt load of clones in the fridge right now. I will throw them into the cloner in two weeks, let you know what happens. I cutt em 2 weeks ago btw. about 8 different strains too. Just sprayed em with plain RO with a touch of florashield.
Glad I stumbled into this one. All this obsessive surfing for weed info pays off every once in a while. Now if I could only make time for work and bitches...
