Hermies caused by stress

Ok peeps I read about growers having problems with their stuff herming out on them and so I thought I would start a thread on the main causes for making this happen. So please everybody post your herm issues let us know the strain how you were growing it if you stopped growing it or if you fixed the problem and how you did it. If you know of a strain that you have that never hermies no natter what post that to.

It's monday... ;-)

1. Genetic predisposition - do not tolerate it/kill it/don't buy those beans again
2. Heat - lower it... mid 80's seem to trip the sensitive ones for me
3. Light Cycle - only had this happen intentionally, before knew this pollen was useless

Those be my 3... peace ;-)

BTW I still have this Nebula that never, ever hermied. However, every seed out of the pack hermied & all but this one girl off of my f-stock hermied. She is a one in 53 & never hermies w other strains do... go figure...???

I was going to put light leaks 1st but I guess your right genetics would come 1st because it all starts there

Heres some things I found on the internet about hermie problems

There are TWO main things that will cause a hermie, those things are:

1 - Having hermaphrodite genetics
2 - Having light leaks during the dark period of flowering (as in light leaking into your room from an external source when the plants are supposed to be in total darkness)

Stressing your plant severely may result in a hermie, but this is less likely if you have good genetics and more likely if you have bad genetics (or genetics prone to becoming hermies - Generally you try to avoid cloning plants that have hermed on you because it's likely that their clones will do the same thing, because clones share the exact genetic makeup of the plant they're taken from).

If you have good, solid genetics and no light leaks during dark period of flowering, it is very unlikely that you will have problems with hermies.

Things like topping, LST, cloning, pruning and even heavy pruning do NOT cause hermies in good strains (strains/phenotypes with good genetics), it MAY cause hermies in strains prone to becoming hermies but even that is unlikely, unless the plant is very prone to it, in which case I'd recommend getting rid of as it is most likely shit genetics that you do not want to keep, or your growing a sensitive "experienced grower" strain which you're not experienced enough to be growing.

So it seems like the main cause is genetics to many breeders are not making their strains stable enough it seems like lot's of them are just trying to make as much money as they can. One thing that I have noticed it seems like breeders come out with strains a lot faster then they used to and it all goes back to greed the faster their put up for sale the more money they can make and as long as everybody keeps buying them they have no reason to change it.

I'll add... I had an issue with 2 separate strains throwing about a half dozen flowers at the same time. I was baffled at first but after a little investigation discovered that the heat vent had closed dropping overnight temperatures well in to the 40s for several weeks before I finally figured it out.

Something good to note in this case... a few dozen very healthy Double Sour Thai S1 (Double Sour Diesel x Sour Thai) seeds were harvested.

I have my own theory on hermies and I also seen some stuff that others I no would say Is a no go like a female herms because of grower errors or not use to the environment her pollen sacks never open but shes become fertilized by a stable man of the same file gen and the off spring never herms what so ever, now I some people say like be gets like but if a female herms do to harsh conditions and constant stress just one or two bananas and none of her off springs inherit the trait is there an exception to the never breed with herms policy even for a very rare strain I would just like to hear anyones unbiased response an or opinion because I have had this happen about three years ago with mextiza and everyone I gave beans to says they a rock solid but I hear all these experts saying herms are terrible and like begets like which is true to an degree but I seen with my own eyes that if a plant was very stressed to the point any strain will produce a male flower but does it real qualify has a herm if it's just one or to flowers and off spring is rock solid in stability ???

with enough stress just about any plant will show some hermie. I've made mistakes with soil mix and all the plants got some degree of male flowers down on the lowest budsites. Or excessive 'nanners in the upper flowers. When the plant is dying prematurely male flowers, mold, root rot, etc are all more likely.
