water your plants with purple gatorade

kidding

lower temps at night usually bring out some purple, then again so does a certain deficiency (i forget which)

purple doesnt mean its better, its just bag appeal

From all the info I've come across so far, it seems to me that purple in the plants comes from one of two sources, stress or genetics.

The purple pheno is apparently recessive, rather annoyingly so. That is where you get the true 'purple' buds. The coloration caused by stress seems to be much less impressive.

If you're not working with plants that contain the purple pheno in their genes, then I would imagine your results with any stressing method would be rather unsatisfying in the end.

I agree with pimpslappped in that it is a genetically recessive trait. But I would add that carbo loading (adding molasses ),low nighttime temps, and nutrient manipulation (reduction in P late in flowering)all help to bring it out.

If your strain has any genetically encoded genes for purple at all, then feeding them 1tsp. of molasses/gal of water during mid/late flowering should help to at least bring out some of the purple. If it doesn't have those genes, then, well, as pimpslapped said, you might be out of luck with getting them to purple at all.

If it is supposed to go purple all by itself like the urkle, PK, etc. then adding molasses will really help to bring the purple. At least it does for me. BTW, I like Aunt Patty's certified organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses but I think any blackstrap will do.

And, as ourcee said, lower temps during the plants' nighttime will also help. But it needs to be a fairly substantial lowering of temps. i.e. at least 10 degrees F. 15 is better.

ourcee is also correct about the nutrient deficiency.
I believe the nutrient that ourcee is referring to is P. If you can cut back on that somewhat during later stage flowering it will also help bring out the purple but don't go crazy with starving them of it too much.

I also agree with ourcee that plants going purple will not affect potency. It's just a color. A pretty one albeit, but just a color (read bag appeal...lmao) nonetheless.

I like to do both the molasses and the temps but I leave the reduction in P to the plants using it up by themselves (in soil) as they go thru flowering. Kinda the same way the fan leaves turn a bit yellow towards the end as they exhaust the available N in the soil.

Hope this helps.

Peace,
Mirage

I aquired some beans from my last bag of purple buds which I am currently growing right now....no low night time temps (temps stay 74-78F) no nutrient deff. or any stresses and the purple color just floods right in and it's been showing up since the first week of flower...purple leaves, purple calyxes and the likes all over the place.

I had some Nirvana K2 plants outside for a couple of weeks in flowering and they went purple...
If it's for bag appeal, just dye it with some natural dyes....
sorry i dont know how the system works :)

But that thing about cold temps at night sounds right to me

are you kidding me know wonder why the UK has problems with ground glass and such now dye duder get real.

as for purple color's in the plant during flowering alot has do do with genitics like my sugar shack it turns purple my memory loss also but again its a urkel cross with strawberry desiel. my strains purple up 80-83 degrees n/p i think most canibis will turn purple if the temps are low enough during lights on under 80 degrees and lower during off 65-70 degrees. couldnt tell ya bout a deff causing purple colors because nute def's cause yellow and spotted leaves and such.

i can 2nd this. this turned some strains purple that don't have purple in their genetics, but some others it didn't make any difference.

purple genetics are the best way though
