Help with first SOG grow/4x4 bed/HLG Scorpion R Spec

So the area I can grow in is only 4ft vertical but essentially unlimited horizontally ( Its what I have until the addition on my house is finished.) I’m use to notill so I was thinking about doing my first SOG in a 4x4 bed using coots mix plus crustacean meal and malted barley powder.

Buddy told me I should do 1plant/Sq Ft which would be 16 plants in the bed. I’d first off like to know if this is the right move(less/more plants.) He said I should roll down the sides of the bed to about 6inches (will copy/paste his explanation below.)

My LED is large/dimmable and doesn’t give off a ton of heat. I’ll show you the math behind the vertical space. 48in total vertically, LED is 3in deep and using let’s say 8in of soil plus there be like 3in between the ceiling and the LED leaves 33inches of space.

From what I read the average SoG plant is around 12 inches, which then leaves 21inches. My LED calls for 12-18inches between light and canopy, so there’s room for a “bigger stretch then we planned for.”

I actually wanted to have a second grow using a different light, wondering if my first light will overlap.. but was curious what you thought the best medium would be for small pots? I’m not a fan of using liquid nutes with soil. My only other option is a very diligent SCRoG style grow, I can still use clones. I wonder if SoG only yields more if one does perpetual over 12 months?

Depends a lot on the genetics, you know, that height and stretch part.. Also depending on how much lateral growth you get, it may get crowded in there with 16 plants! But I'd still try it rather than go 9 plants and be it too airy canopy.

Since I already have a mother plant I was thinking I might as well take clones and SOG in the bed… Utilize the mother plant so I don’t have to veg for nearly as long.

What are your thoughts on SOG in a bed (all from 1 mother plant?) I have heigh limitations so I was thinking I should roll the sides of the bed down and only use like 8in of soil. Does that sound like a solid plan?

I normally grow notill but can’t until addition at my house is finished, but wanted to keep a grow going! Here’s the mother plant(s), big one (bodhi) was neglected but bouncing back after transplant and the smaller one (in-house) is genuinely growing super fast… Might take a couple clones from smaller one for around perimeter of the bed.

As long as the mix is good and the feed is doing the job, I don't see a problem with sog in a 8 inch bed. Roots should not even need more than that, and may not even touch or interact during a grow, like it could even be more than enaugh space in there for your needs.

Ok thanks always trying to learn! I’m in a situation and not sure what I should do, due to the height limitations. What would you suggest bud?

I’ve been told that SOG grows generally only yield more when you always have clones ready and grow perpetually.

I was thinking about using the 4x4 bed and doing a SCRoG grow but am unsure, just due to height limitations but I think if I was diligent LSTing everything horizontally it would work as normal. Usually I’d have 4 plants in the bed when doing SCRoG, but maby due to height limitations I’ll have 5 plants but just a little smaller.

Thoughts?

I would do the scrog in the bed, put the bed on to the middle of the space, so you have place to lean the plants to one side or the other while training. Find a way to run some strings or a scrog or whatever to do that and keep them level and under the light. Some reusable plant ties or tieng soft wire from the regular garden store would probably help you. Only LST, with maybe some supercropping later in flower is all you need. I done stuff like that before even with no strings or nets.
