Help with elicent fan dimmer

Hey folks...anyone think they can give me a hand hooking up a dimmer switch to my fan?

I'm pretty sure it goes

wall plug-------dimmer-------dimmer plug/fan pluf----------fan

But the freakin thing only has three wires...how can I wire two piece of chord with a dimmer with only three wires?

Thanks for your help folks

Is it a dimmer or a SSSC? Dimmers don't work well with most fans...if they do run, it'll shorten the life of the fan quite a bit.

SSSC's usually have an incoming and outgoing hot line as well as a ground...

Hello Trichomus san

The method you seek is this.

Since two of three wires from the solid state speed control(sssc) are black. This means the sssc is not polar. So it doesn't matter which black/black connection you make, both will work.

1.You take the female cord's black wire, and twist it with the black wire from the sssc.
2.You take the male cord's black wire and twist it with the other black wire from the sssc.
3. You twist together the two green wires from the male and female cords, and then also add the green wire from the sssc(3 twisted wires total).
4. You twist together the two white wires from the male and female cords.
5. Cover each group with a wire-nut

You can also add a little electrical box to make it a bit safer than having wire-nuts exposed.

Enjoy your speed controlling abilities, grasshopper.

to my mind the wall plug would attach to the speedo and the speedo to the fan... really the speedo is just bridging the connections between the plug and the fan, you dont have 2 seperate wires hanging from the fan. Emailthe manufacturers for a diagram....

Hey there:

My lights are off now, but once they turn on (about 9:00) I'll go take a pic for you of how my elicient 8" fan is hooked up to a cheapo standard light switch dimmer. I'm sure the info others gave you is correct, but it'll just be another way of confirming it visually.

Ninja was 100% correct....

Not sure how well you can see in the pic. This is a typical dimmer you'd get at home depot that would be used in place of a light switch to dim the light instead of turn it on and off....I've since lost the plastic knob, but works just as well. When I was trying to do this, I called a retailer of elicient to order their dimmer that went with the fan (the fans had the option of coming with a dimmer or adding one on), the guy told me to do it this way instead of spenign $25 on their dimmer. My fan has worked fine ever since. I'm prolly gonna put it in a box for more safety, but it's worked like this for a while.....a few years now

Like Ninja said, unplug, cut the cord, strip wires.....

one black connection from the dimmer one way on the cord (say towards the fan), the other black connection the other way (say, towards the end/plug), then the green connection to both of the greens and same with the white.

stoned teacher, did you put the sssc right on the fan cord? I would advise future thread viewers not do such that as it could possibly void the warranty for the fan. I have never checked with the company to see if it would or not. But I would be on the safe side and not damage the fan in any visible way possible, just in case. These fans aren't cheap and to have something like a manipulated cord not get you a new fan from the company should yours ware out in the warranty time frame is a true shame.

This doesn't look too ghetto, marx2k san.

It would look pretty professional in an electrical box with a plate, I think.

Trichomus san, as stoned teacher so kindly demonstrated to us by his imagery, your sssc should be hooked up like this.

I'm no electrian but as far as I know using a dimmer or anything except a speed controler will shorten the fan life and may very well cause a fire.
