Hi to all . i am having this problem , the only leaves that stay alive are the 2 top sets that grow . my plants (6) keep growing every 2 days one new set of leaves appear but the ones under them keep duying. Why is this happening? here is the info: 1 closet 60 cm deep 1.00 m wide and 2.00 m tall , i am trying to veg under a hps 400w (1st mistake?) the strain is some outdoor local strain(2nd mistake?) i have a cool tube with a fan blowing through all the time i have an exaust and 3 same sized holes at the bottom for intake the exaust fan is working all the time(3rd mistake?) and a small fan inside for air circulation
is there something wrong about my construction or 6 plants is to much for my space(someone told me that they dont breathe enough)? please respond and thanx n advance.
forgot to mension that new growth is yellowish and temps are 22 celcious and humidity at 40 to 60 % thanx

What kind of soil are you using? What's in it?
How are you fertilizing? How often?
How often are you watering?

We'd like to help you, but you've got to give us some basic information...

How long has this problem been going on?
What STRAIN are you growing?
What was the establishing technique? (seed or clone?)
What is the age of your plants?
How long have they been in the soil mixture they are in now?
How Tall are the plants?
What PHASE (seedling, vegetative or flower) are the plants in?
What Technique are you using? (SOG, SCROG etc)
What size pots are you using? (Include how many subjects to pot)
What substrate/medium are you using? What brand of soil mixture are you using?(percentage of perlite, vermiculite...etc?)
What Nutrient's are you using?
How much of each nutrient are you using with how much water? *Knowing the brand is very helpful*
How often are you feeding?
If flowering, when did you switch over to using Bloom nutrients?
What order are you mixing your nutrients? (example: veg nutes 1st, bloom 2nd ect)
What is the TDS/EC/PPM of your nutrients used?
What is the pH of the "RUN-OFF"?
What method of pH test was administered? Using Strips? pH pen?
How often are you watering?
When was your last feeding and how often are you feeding?
What size bulb are you using?
What is the distance to the canopy?
What is your RH Factor? (Relative Humidity)
What is the canopy temperature?
What is the Day/Night Temp? (Include fluctuation range)
What is the current Air Flow? (cfm etc.)
Tell us about your ventilation, intake exhaust and when its running and not running ?
Is the fan blowing directly at plants?
Is the grow substrate constantly wet or moist?
Is your water HARD or SOFT?
What water are you using? Reverse Osmosis (RO)? Tap? Bottled? Well water? Distilled? Mineral Water?
Are you using water from a water softener?
Has plant been recently pruned, cloned or pinched?
Have any pest chemicals been used? If so what and when?
Are plant's infected with pest's?

Hey dude,
Your mistakes are NOT mistakes at all. Think where you got this info in the first place, and why you bothered trying it. Mmmmm!
No mate you can veg very comfortably under a 400w HPS, just remember it doesent work well for seedlings and clones, it's just too intense for baby seedlings, & clones will root much better in low light levels, lower light levels encourage rooting, but, stick a little spreder-matt over your propagator and set your lamp (HPS) at 5'-6' and it's doable, yes' with a HPS even,-speaking from experience, it's not a bother. I always start with CFL's or the like untill they have hardened off a little and are showing say 2-3 sets of true leaves, then set your HPS lamp height at say 5', and gradually adjust accordingly, then you aint gonna go wrong. After 3-4 wks your lamp height is gonna be 24" or so, depending on your enviroment. I recommend Grolux for veg and flower. I have had the best results using this very system. I've been doing this for well over 15 years, nearer 20. It's also not a mistake to keep your ventilation(exhaust) on 24/7, infact, it's a very good idea actually. For all sorts of reasons, where do i start on that one, Just try adding a heater on the outside of your intake so the air you have coming in is say 70f-74f,'Perfect'. Your mate who told you they dont breath enough dont know what the hell he is talking about-dont listen to him, thats for a fact dude. You say you have 3x passive intake compared to your exhaust, this is also correct. It sounds to me like you are doing a decent job on your enviromentals, so, that leaves us with your Soil mix or nutes if you are feeding, which you shouldent be at this stage anyway. No, if i were you i would check out a decent soil mix, one that is well airy with plenty of perlite for example. I would agree that your mix is too hot(nute rich) so sort that out and see where you go from there. Check P.H and E.C(feed strenght) set it right and I bet you'll be just fine. Hope ive cleared a few issues up for you buddy.

(outdoor breeds wont do very well indoor sometimes but as for damage like that no, it aint because there outdoor specific, of that i'm sure)

Embryonic,
It also looks to me like those are fairly large pots for those plants. It's always good to start in small cups and transplant up. Better for root development.

Seedlings do best in a very mild no-nutrient mix. Clones are a little tougher.

I start seeds in rockwool...into beer cups...into 3 quart pots...to 2 gallon where they stay.

Thanx guys here is some extra info
They sprout out from seeds directly in theese large pots directly with the hps maybe thats the mistake . They are now 35 days old and about 10 - 15 cm tall so they are stuned because they should be at least 30 cm right?
i now have made a smaller cuppboard with a bulb (flora nova ) i think its named 125 watt i have some new seedligs in there and they are greener than the ones that sprout out directly to the hps(son-t-argo) they are one week old and i will put them after one month at least to the flowering cab and then we will see how things are going
I forgot to mention that i have all mix soil from biobizz and all the nutrients of biobizz but i start after two weeks with root juice for one week and then root and base nutrient for one two weeks and then biobizz base and grow nute but you all know nutes work better in healthy plants right? thanx for the advise everyone and soon i will have some pictures posted from my new smaller cab

E,
You'd be much better off starting seeds in smaller containers using a specific seed starting mix. Then up-pot as needed. Don't feed till the plant tells you it needs it. Hint of yellow. And then start with weak nutes (1/4) and build up. The new CFL will be better for the small plants. Not too close.

Hey dude listen to ET, I'd Agree totally, if your worried about light levels(intensity) just cover your propagator with some spreader matt as this encourages rooting(Seedlings&Clones). Do not feed Untill you think they need it. They wont in a soil mix for at least 2 weeks, after that - yip- quater strength.
G'Luck........................Scroger
Ps-When you start feeding use this system- water-feed-water-feed etc, water one day feed the next and so on ,yeah!

maybe the strain ,maybe i fed them a little too early and the fact that they sprout out in the 400 w gave me this result ,anyway is there any way they can recover now? i think they arre too week now because they are yellow and heavy drop looking leaves . the new seedlings are from a different strain also outdoor and with cfl and little white foam cups seems to grow in better conditions as the colour is dark green and they are one week old now (wanted to post some pics but forgot my camera at home)
