currently germinating a few seeds that im going to put in a 400 w mh/hps setup...this is my first attempt but im taking this pretty seriously...seeing how far away i should put the bulb from the seedlings when they sprout?? i dont wanna burn my babies..get back soon!!!

Hi there man,

1st, good for you. No more crappy weed bying.

Now the lights. The only problem the seedlings have or any size plant, is heat.

You can place your light as close as you like as far as the temps at seedling (or cannopy level) is 77 to 86 max.

If you don't have a thermometer yet, try using your hand. If it is uncomfortable for your hand to stay next to your plants then you need to lower the temp.

You can do that either by rising the light or increasing ventilation.

Congrats on the first grow, its all good once you start

I`m running a 400WATT HPS on 2 plants and like R A said heat is the major factor. I have a 4 inch extractor fan 2 inches above the light which is 18 inches above the plants

Between the two I have a 4 inch fan for circulation which seriously lowers the temp at plants level

I guess if you have a powerfull enough fan between light and plants you can put them as close as possible

I am looking into flourescent strip lights for seedlings, they are quite cheap and don`t put out much heat at all

Persevere and hopefully you will get far............day 61

Use floros for the seedlings, don't risk killing them with the 400 watter. If you have to use it I would keep it pretty far away from the seedling till they grow a bit bigger.

The first thing I noticed you said was you are taking it pretty seriously. Very important statement. Dont think you can cut corners and get the desired results, in anything you do in life, including growing. Keep reading the postings here on this site and apply that knowledge, and your first grow should bring great results.

Like DazhyDro said, I would use floro's for the first 2-3 weeks. They get the job done effectively.

DazhyDro is right.....

USE FLOUROS ON SEEDLINGS.....Then after about 5 days turn on the HID lights for a couple of hours, then increase the amount of time the HID lights are on each day until you get to what every duration of light you're going to use for veg phase (16-18 or 24)

That HID will fry your seedling if you turn it on for over 6 hours the first day! (especially if its nearer then 2 feet from the seedling). Go easy with the light and water! I almost killed my babies several months ago by overwatering them---the smaller they are, the less water they need.

Don't give them any nutes for 2 weeks and when you do, let it be at half strength.

Watch your temps!! Don't let the temps climb above 80F or fall below 65 at night.

yer man go buy a cheap florecent light from a diy store , dont even think about putting a MH-HPS on ya babies yet it will be tooooo much light for them.

think of it like this :a baby plant is like a todler and a mature plant is like ozzy osbourne if they both take a hit of LSD which one will come off better...lol

im not sure how much you no as you havent stated so heres the basic stuff you gotta know:
LIGHT:
there is to kinds of light that a cannabis plant uses red light and blue light .
blue light is the time in spring when all the plants are growing with a "standard veg light cycle" of 18 hours on 6 hours off (18/6) .
red light is at the end of summer when there are multiple harvests ...ie corn,fruit ect..this is standard flowering time of 12/12 .

kelvin .... most growers no that the kelvin is what we talk about most instead of red and blue light

red light (optimum kelvin for plant growth) = 2700k
blue light(optimum kelvin for plant growth) = 6400k

kelvin is the colour temperature of the light frequency..... gobbledeeegoook

...........................babies need 6400k-6500k florecents................

short sweet and simply the truth. floros for seedlings, MH/HPS (MH imo) for however long you want to veg them, HPS for flower. the fans myay work but teh the proper lighting for the specific stages is just safer.

I'm a newb as well, and I can tell you from recent experience that everything you're reading above is good advice. I fried my seedlings with only 164 watts of CFL.

A few survived, but they are examples of george j warner's todlers on LSD. They're deformed and on life support.(LOL)

Hmmm I would think that the 400 as long as kept like 12 -16 inches off the tops would make for some damn fine strong seedlings.Depending on their age and height you could move the light closer as they develop.Flouros are great but if the big light is all u got I say go for it just start far away and go slow,good luck on the first grow and remember stay safe!!!

Hi

Id buy some floros or envirolites, there pretty cheap and will pay for themselves 10 times over in a few months.

I veg 35 plants a time in a homebox clone unit, using 4 * 55w floros that are £20 each.

I used to grow them on window sills or under house lights until they were 5 - 6 " tall but they stretched too much

The floros make a huge difference and will ensure your plants are healthier and more compact and ready for your flower lighting.

Dutch you are absolutely correct. You may not believe this but I was just deleting my posts when I came across your post.

I was wrong here; I got my gander up when some people started disrespecting me. However I am old enough to know better. Last nite when this thing heated up I wanted off of here. I can’t help anyone anyway as there is usually a troll to shoot me down. However after receiving some PMs Today from some fellow growers I feel that me leaving would only satisfy there BS needs. I will now go and continue to delet any offensive post I made.
