HELP! Is my light too close?!?!?

So I believe I read that the closest you can put a 1kw light is 22 inches so that's how I designed the grow room...

It is sour diesel in coco under a 1k watt HPS hortilux bulb with a regular (not digital) ballast. The top of the branches directly underneath the light are exactly 22 inches from the BULB (the glass shield broke so there isn't a shield) and the temp is 82F max. The leaves directly underneath are NOT showing any sign of "bleaching" or "striping" but they are however a lighter green (guessing from the extra photosynthesizing?) The problem is that at 39 days (5.5 weeks) the tops directly underneath the light have much less trichomes on the flower and leaves... Is this light too close?? If so would anyone who's experienced this be able to guess about how many more inches I need to take up the light? Due to not being able to take the light up anymore I need to know if I'm going to have to break part of the closet to move the light up... hopefully not :x

the stop branches how dense are the top stems with the flowers your talking about have less hairs that isnt very helpful without knowing how big the stems are and things like that pictures would really help i would say you should start over and do a scrog or just tie them down my nyc d doesnt strech at all i dont know what up with yours

thats way to close i use 400w lamps in cooltubes and only put them about a 10inches away and basicly.... hottest my room gets is 75F


this is the reel real deal on your problem -IF you see buds start to kinda grow outwards instead of getting dense so if its getting fluffy its prob too late anyway...

i would get your glass fixed ASAP hopefully your good is air cooled sorry i didnt read the whole entire thing you need some computerfans and things like that just little fans near the lamp and also on the buds really all you needa do is see how your hand feels @ the top of your canopy if its too hot well your gonna have fluffy buds you still have time to train them and you prob still have time to just cut some tops off when those nugs at the top are getting to close then the lower ones will get bigger good luck i think she would be done streching mostly but i would tie it down some im not

how much space do you have from your table to to the bulb just get a mh bulb ull get more thc if your growing sour D im guessing your after a strong sativa rich with thc thats gonna help with a mh more than a hps hps will just hopefully give you a better yield and denser nugs because you have such a strong lamp to begin with thats my opinion

It's not too close.
If it's too close, you will see the leaves bleached right under the light at the closest point.
Even if that happens, no worries. It won't ruin them. But they are good if not bleached.

i put my hand where the closest branches are and it doesnt get too hot. and the temps arent too high either... 82f. I have a MH thats not as strong as the HPS should i use that instead?? i heard the HPS is much better and will produce denser nugs doesnt it?

Stop worrying about nothing. Leave the HPS. You don't have a problem. If the plants aren't getting bleached, they are not too close.

I would say yer on the the verge of bein too close, or close enough they're not happy with it. There's no set distance for how far yer light should be. Each situation is gonna be different; reflector, strain, over all temps in a grow room, how much air you have moving through an air cooled hood, etc... will all have an effect on how close you can get yer light. Yer plants will tell ya if it's too close though....... You do need ta replace yer glass, and it would help if yer fan was blowing over the tops of the plants and not blowin right on them. You wanna whisk the heat away. If ya have no glass and a fan blowing right on the plants yer jus suckin the heat off the bulb and puttin it right on the plants, raising the temps. You could also bend em over outta the sweet spot if can't raise the light. Good luck! BC

you gotta cool it down in there, but be careful not to suck out all the humidity when you do.

Also get the plexi glass, it is like 10 bucks. you can move closer than 22 in.

ok here are the pics of the buds closest to the light

and here are the buds further away from the light

its easier to tell in real life, but the buds closest to the light at the top of the branches closest to the light are much smaller and compact, and the hairs coming off of them are much shorter and less, and the little trichomes all over the flowers and leaves are much much less than the nugs further from the light. the buds and leaves under the light are less "frosty". im worried about this because i know that the most THC is concentrated in the trichomes

im interested to see. ive had almost the same thing with the same strain in the past and ide love to hear what someone thinks. and i dont know if its just em but those buds closer to the light almost always seem to taste like nothing while the bottom ones taste like dank

Yes , heat will make the buds thinner and whispier. 22 inches seems too close even for a cooltube under 1000s in a small enclosed environment.

its not a cooltube i just have a fan blowing OVER and across the top of the canopy. the temps are about 82 F maximum and they are NOT in an enclosed environment. There is a fresh air supply drawing air in from the outside and blowing behind the fan so the fan can blow the fresh, cool air over the canopy whenever the light is on

...well id rather not have to raise the light cuz that would cause me to have to destroy part of the closet in an apartment which im moving out of in 2 months. If i have to move the light up anymore id have to break part of the closet and then pay to fix it when i move out. I'm trying to figure out if all the trouble and cost of breaking my closet would be worth it. in order to figure out if the benefit>cost i need to know how much damage the light being that close is doing. but since this is my first time i really have no idea if it is too close or not. hence me posting in here asking for other peoples opinions! thanks for the replies everyone

Yeah, but directly beneath the light it could be a lot hotter, radiant heat etc..

the temp probe is placed at the highest point of the canopy directly under the lamp....
