Well i just up'd my system, got my 400w hps with its hood. its directly air cooled with a 6" centrifugal running at like 3/4 speed. my two intakes are both 4" booster fans. temps are somwhere like 101-2 and i need quick help be4 i lose my kids

also what are your ambient temps
and are you growing in a box ,size? try a passive intake where its twice the size of your exhaust, have your passive intake at the bottom and you exhaust at the top , if you are growing in a box(cab) the area it is in if it is hot the box will be even hotter, usually
~5* is what is idea , some peopel can get get their ventilation and system dialed in to be near a few degrees of ambient temps. just my two cents, also running lights during the day if your climate is hot during these months will increase temps

well its about 56 " high, and like 25 by 30 inches fo length n width. Its right now 77.9 deg. f. and thats maintained pretty well throughout the day.
my plants are about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks along...

lights are off right now and temps cooled substantially.

As for intake.. i have two 4 inch fans, and i hate having the centrif. fan up as high as it is... its loud

this is killing me! i'm definitly cutting back my light cycle from 21 down to like 18, (they are autoflowers)

maybe i bit off more than i can chew, i might have to take it back down to a 200w or so, what do ya think friend?

If you havn't, you should read red's vent thread

This is tough because alot of what you're reading is very spescific. It involves alot of math, alot of reading, and alot of patience to understand what he's trying to make clear. A through read thread seems impossible when things are going bad in the cab, but take the time right now(before it's too late) and identify the problems specific to YOUR space.

I'm sure people here will still help you, however.

my 6" centrifugal going straight to the hood, i don't have my carbon filter yet so the duct is just kinda thown back there.

You're choking the cab. A 6" exhaust uses two 6" intakes. Two 4" intakes are less than half the intake you need. Punch out two more 4" intakes or widen the ones you have to 6".

Those high temps cause so many problems and so much stunted growth punx. I had to bite the bullet and get the air-con going - it was the only option - but it worked. Plants have never been happier.

AC should be considered.

is your temp guage in direct light or is it in the shade of the plants. If it is in direct light, you'll get a false reading.

yea i moved it under a plastic part of the fan and it seemed to knock it down several points, woot.

I'd suggest making your intakes passive. Play around with various locations for you exhaust vents and interior fans to move the air. It does seem like much, but by messing around with that for awhile I got my temps from 10 degrees over ambient to 3.

Your intake area is too small. Read that again: YOUR INTAKE AREA IS TOO SMALL.
You also don't need active intake, it's not really going to do much for you in this case except raising your power bill and costing you for the fans themself.

You want between 150% to 200% intake area compared to output area. A 6" circle is
about 28.3 sq-in, a 4" circle is only 12.6 sq-in. So with 2 4" intakes your setup is only about 90% of output area. Add at least one more 4" hole, preferably 2 more. Your fan will move alot more air and it will have to work less than with a choked off intake. (

Also note that for area of circles 2 x 6" circles does not have the same area as 1 x 12" circle...so if you need to add a 4" hole but don't have room for one big one and intend to use several smaller ones, do the math to find out how many you need. To match a 4" dia hole with several 2" holes you'd need:

Area of circle = Pi x radius^2.
Pi = 3.1415

Area of 4" dia = 3.1415 x 2^2= 3.1415 x 4 = 12.6 sq-in.
Area of 2" dia = 3.1415 x 1^2= 3.1415 x 1 = 3.1415 sq-in

12.6 / 3.14 = ~ 4 holes.

I've run many rounds with a 400w air cooled hood in a 20"x30"x70" cabinet with a 6" vortex, and I can stay within 3 deg of ambient, no problem.

I agree with Eclap: More Passive intakes is the way to go. You already have a big centrifugal which is more than enough to cool a 400. Active intakes in your situation just eat up power.
You need much more intake area, but you can cool a 400 in your sized cab to just a few above ambient with a huge fan like that. You just need to make your system extract heat more efficiently.

Also, are you venting the heat out of the room via attic or window or just recirculating? You have to actually remove the heat from the room, not just the box.

definitely want intake ports to be at least 2-4 times that of your exhaust port. i'd switch your more powerful fan as your exhaust fan and run full power. vent your light separately to out of the flower box. next time have light schedule to turn on after the sun goes down. run exhaust and canopy fans 24/7.

i run a 1kwt in a 3x3 tent in my garage. during the day temps are 90+ in the garage and same inside the tent. at night is when i flower and temps are around 75-80* in the morning and my thermometer is at canopy level and gets hit by the light so i know what the plants are getting. i have my hood air-cooled but not hooked up to ducting, just a fan blowing across the bulb and circulates into the tent - made a huge difference in temp issues, would help more if had ducting. it helps that the exhaust fan is right there to suck it out though. i also have a fan to vent my garage. good luck man!

I'll definitly set up some more holes, i took down the 400 watter, got the ballast and bulb sold on ebay already and got my 70 watter set up, all three of my girls showin off their sensimilla :p I got a 250w hood and ballast comin in the mail.

My question. currently my 70w is 81.5 constant thats 7.8 degrees above ambient. How much higher will it be with a 250? How about a 150? Thanks for all the help guys?

running the exhuast out of the room can make up to 20 degree difference, my partner has a 400 in a 30''x20'' area running at 80 deg w/ a 4'' high velocity van vented to the attic
