Help dissect my roots

Hope this is the rite spot for this.

So this is my first real grow. What do my roots tell me? So I started in a biodegradable cup. Bout half size of solo cup. Transplant to 1 gal container then to 5gal smart pot. Pretty thick one. So the container was packed full of roots but didn't see any coiling around bottom or sides nor did I see signs of them being air pruned but they might have been. as the cloth never got wet no matter how much water whent through it. Maybe a couple little spots. The main roots just circled it's self by the stem and didn't go down. The feeder roots were tinted brown slightly but as they dry there getting white. Not to much main root as you see but packed with little roots. After 20 min of trying to wash dirt out of them I gave up as it was inposable so I cut it open. What would all that tell you and let me know if I'm missing any thing. Maybe need a bigger/smaller pot? To much/not enough water? My bigger plant arn't done yet but they have problems and think maybe pot is too small, but 5 gal smart pot shouldn't be, idk.

One other thing. The two best plants were growing like crap at veg and turnd around at 12/12. The other two blew up in veg and whent down hill at 12/12. All fed the same. This one was the dwarf but came out best. It was 6 inches shorter and didn't top due to the size

That makes sense As the main root ball is a lil bigger then that cup was. Would that affect and cause the bad beginning stages? Any why did the other 2 do fine? Just broke down faster probably.

That would be my guess. If you use them again cut some slits in them when you pot up. Or peal them off.

I used them years ago and those peat pellets too.Now i recycled plastic six packs that bedding plants come in. Or cut down pop bottels.

I look back and there were some roots coming out the bottom and a few threw the sides. When I transplanted I took the tops off. Like about a half inch down so dirt was showing. I didn't take them off because there were roots going threw. And ware I tore the top section off it basicly fell off so I didn't think there would have been a problem.
They did circle as if they were in some thing but it was very brittle. I think it was recycled paper of some sort. Home Depot garden cups. Not totally sure at the moment.

Roy's on point.

Any pics of the live plants with problems?

I can take some in the morning. And I have a post asking for help a few weeks into 12/12. Top rite. I'm thinking underfed as there lot bigger then the rest. Bottom left started it also. They all are same strain. But again it might be root problem. They will be done shortly. I let them go s lil longer but it think there toast.

this was the 16th. There worse now. All fan leaves I left on bottom yellowed and died starting on bottom going up the plant. In that pic you see one on bottom rite. I'll take some in morning
Yellowing started at tips and moved in. Some curling up and dying some just drooping and dying.

This is it under MH and HPS. Roots look good except the coiling. It is def below the cup and doesn't look like its to the bottom of the 1gal pot I used. I'm thinking root bound. Or needed more food. That plants tallest bud was almost 4 feet. There was a lot on the bottom showing in the smart pot but none growing in the fabric

I used to start a lot of things in peat pots, mostly vegetables, but switched to things similar to what MicroRoy is talking about. With the peat pots, when I transplanted I always took my thumb and gently pulled away part of the bottom, not to totally remove it because most of the time there were roots growing thru it. You may lose or disrupt a few roots but not enough to really hurt the plant...they bounce back pretty quick. And it's better than having them strangle themselves. Most of the time when that happens you see stunted growth.

With your last picks it's probably a feeding issue as there's plenty of root mass. Some plants like to be root bound and others don't. I just took down a 3 footer I made some seed with, grown in a solo cup. It just kept going and going. Had to water it everyday, sometimes twice. It's weird...when you dump out the cup to look at the roots it's a solid root mass, you think, where did the soil go?

Exactly. We're did it go lol. Plant must have ate it. I'm sure it gets broke down and plant does eat it.

What you're seeing is how the roots started circling while in the smaller container. You can lessen that by making vertical slices 1/2 to 1" into the root ball at transplant. Where they are sliced, they will branch and stop circling. Good luck. -granger

I will def change things in next grow thank you. It was not natural as it started a week into 12/12. Very airy and underdeveloped. I thought it was over fed lock out so I flush. Thought over water so slowed down. I tryed few things and it took time and after all that it was too late. I asked for help when it was happining and didn't get any thing that helped.

You did good for a beginner. Some have a lot of total fails in the beginnng. You made it through the whole grow.

Your next grow will be great.
