Help, can't figure it out!

Hey everyone,

I've had a problem with my plants for a while and can't seem to figure out what it is.

I am growing in half potting mix/compost from the local shop with some perlite and lime added also. They are in 30Ltr pots and get fed twice a week with earth juice grow and microblast and are handwatered. The Run-off PH is 6.0 - 6.5. They are under a 600 Watt HPS that is about 450mm above the tops. Temps range from 70F-84F.

The leaves are a quite yellow colour and some have dying brown parts which eventually die off about half the affected finger.

Here are some pics, hope they help.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

keke,
Your soil looks pretty dry...just an observation. Don't know if that's part of the problem.

Chlorosis is usually a sign of not enough N. I'd up the feeding.

Is your water any good? Too hard? Too much Ca++ can lock out other nutrients.

That's all that comes to mind with the information provided.

Hi Keke, the top pic although a bad focus job, looks like a calcium/iron deficiency, but looking at the bottom pic, with the exception of the plant on the bottom right, they all look very underfed. If mine ever go that colour, i use some 15 ml spoon of miracle grow powder for just one feed...Then flush with ph balanced water, then start adding nutes at half rate for a week then go back onto full strength. Usually within 2 weeks they are back to normal..

Hope this helps.

Hey EvilTwin, thanks for your post. Yeah they are a bit dry but was intentional. My tap water comes out at 8 ph.. which I then use ph down to neutral it.

stinger_489, thanks for your post. I did think they could be underfed but i grew these last time round and fed them around the same.. I am thinking of flushing and giving a good watering tonight when they lights come on so thanks for the idea. I have just switched them to 12/12 this morning.

Hey WeedChuck, yeah the thai super skunk was potted after the others and got a good soil mix and is that size after 3-4 veg.. The other plants have a cheap 50/50 potting mix/compost with perlite and lime added.

I will feed them tonight a good dose and see how things are in a week.

read on that "general garden lime" container. Does it say "hydrated" anywhere? there is a big difference in lime, even if it says garden lime. Im suspecting that might be your biggest issue.

the ace hardware near me sells "garden lime" and it is hydrated. another hardware store near sells "garden lime" and its pelletized dolomite lime. both packages say "garden lime"

Do you think if i re-pot them into 50ltr containers with the good soil it will help them? They have just gone into flower.

I can't find the lime packet but it was in a powdered form. Whats the difference between hydrated of un-hydrated?

Thanks keke

if they were mine...
1. take clones if needed. save the genes mon. the stress of whats abt to come may cause them to herm
2. get them out of that dirt and literally wash as much as possible off under a tap.
3. get em in the good dirt & flush that hard with ph'd water
4. trim them hard
5. back under veg light for at least 2 weeks. no water for a week
6. say a prayer or two

you would be supprised the at how rough iam with the girls sometimes. more often than not they like it.
when i repot a plant i trim the root balls hard!

its up to you mate. you could just take some clones and ur learned lessons and push on with how they are... should have some bud for new years ;)

have you tried just flushing them?
should maybe try different things with them all..
leave one
run 10ltrs of water through another
repot one
etc etc

Even if you never get a confirmed diagnosis at least you will know what fixes the problem

Hey JWP, thanks for the ideas. They are looking a little greener this morning after watering yesterday. I think I will just carry on with them and hope for the best, as it was my plan to have buds for new years.. I have many clones going for outdoors at the moment so the genes will be there for clones later this summer.

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions.

I'm thinking the lime added to the soil is buffering the soil pH up too high and your locking out iron.High pH and calcium = no iron.

let your pot sit after watering, and an hour later add a little more water, just enough to get a little runoff. Elevate the pot when you do this. You don't want to lean the pot over to get the runoff, unless the pot's too big to handle.

Thanks hazy, I'll give it a go. The girls are getting greener and looking healthy but i still think theres a iron def.

Whats the purpose of adding a little water an hour later hazy? To try level out the Ph or to get a good run-off reading?

Thanks for the help.
