HELP/ADVICE with PLLs?

Ok.

I know next to nothing abotu PLLs except that they look friggin' awesome.

A friend of mine grabbed a couple of PLL lamps from work that were destined for the trash.

These things were used in a track-lighting situation.

AFAIK the only thing wrong with them is that the little clips that keep it fixed in the track have broken. The lamps themselves work.

What I want to know is... does anybody know of an easy way for me to wire these bad boys up? If so... free PLLs for my ladies.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
Any info you need from me, ask and I'll get it for you.

ummm...you should be able to wire em up with an old 3 prong cord....like the one that plugs into the back of your computer....is there green white and black wires comming out? and do you know if it's a 110 or 220 ballast or w/e?...should say on the ballast if you don't know. btw I'm not an expert or anything....

is that what you meant bro? how to wire up the electrical?


edit: also how big is that thing? 55w pl-l's are like 22-23 inches...36w are like 17-18 inches i think..er ...nm you have bulbs already...but what wattage bulbs does it run? (just curious)

Use 27w Twin Tube Compact Flourescent Lamp
Philips PL-L 24w or OSRAM, Dulux L-27w or GE F27BX

The whole thing is maybe 18-20" long and holds 2 of the above bulbs.

There are no wires coming out (yet) but I haven't attempted to get inside the case and see how it is all hooked up.

Cool. I would strip it down and get to the ballast if it has one. They usually have a wiring diagram on them including where the ac goes.

ok. i managed to get the ballast and wiring out of those shells.

Looks like it only has a positive and a negative. No ground. Can i just wire this thing up to an extension cord or do I need a DC inverter (or whatever)?

I *think* this is the bulb I'm supposed to use with these. Help a brother out.

Yes It does require a ground! It says right on the ballast "Green Terminal must be Grounded"
So you must use a three conductor cord.
And yes you can wire it so it will plug right in to 120 volt outlet.
Just remember wiring done incorrectly could cause a fire or electrocution.

The reason I was unsure is that in it's commercial use (this thing was in use in a business) it was part of a track lighting system. The green wire was NOT attached by whatever company sold these lights.

I know next to nothing about lighting or track lighting, so maybe they have some other way of grounding track lighting, but I'm telling you that the green wire has not been hooked up to this thing previously.

It might have been grounded through the track it self.
If the device has a point to hook up a ground then it is always a good idea to use a ground even if the previous application did not use it.

hmmm i dunno anti...it think 277v is a commercial type voltage...I know my friend had a 277v 1000w hps that sat in his garage for years because he said it was a pain to hook up...(he stole it from a parking lot... shhhhhh)

I'm not positive but I think wiring up a 277v ballast to 120v isn't safe at all...if you look at 1000bulbs there's 2 types of each ballast...the 120 and the 277....if you could just wire a 277 up to 120 then why sell both types ya know?

be safe! just call an electrician or a lighting store and they can tell you what's up.



edit: that looks like the right type of bulb(s) for it.

The picture of the ballast show .47amps @ 120volt or .20amps @ 277volts so it should run on 120 volts But I do not see a wiring diagram for the 120 volt.
