Having trouble with large outdoor plantz...

I have some rootbound plants in 25 gal fab pots. The roots have also grown thru the bottom of the pots into the ground. So, the plants have bud sites all over now and the new leaf growth around these small buds appear dry and cracked. The leaf edges are curled up. This is happening mostly at the ends of the branches, and some of the lower branches look OK, but not really. A lot of the new buds have turned brown and are dying. I thought it may have been under watering, so today i made a hose accessible to the site so I can water them every day. Don't know if that's going to fix it though. Got any advice?

Well since the roots have grown through you don't want to move them or try to transplant. I made that mistake once trying to move a plant in a fabric pot in August and it recovered but was not at all happy about it...

Definitely water every day if need be. get some mulch on top of the pot if you can to conserve water if its crazy hot where you are. If you have some extra dirt, pile it up around the edge of the pot and keep that moist as well. If the container is black wrap it in some burlap or something to help reflect heat.

Is there any good looking green growth?

Let's see, there is new growth but leaves near buds are coming out curled down and wrinkled and have a hard cracked appearance. This is happening to a ssh, chse, and one mlwi. 2 mlwi appear OK.

That sucks. SSH is my favorite. You using any preventative insect sprays? If not get some organic stuff. Put a scope on the underside of the leaves and make sure there are no bugs. Are you out west? Lots of Russet mites this year...Use a moisture meter to make sure you are watering at the right times, not overdoing it.

Can you post some pics?

I'll try to get some pics for tonite. Im starting to think the problem is primarily heat stress. Probably more than just heat stress tho.

Oh man, I hate to say it but that looks like bugs to me...Those leaves that are curling on the edges or "tacoing" can definitely be a sign of Russet or Broad mites. Do a quick google search on that to see for yourself. Also the yellowing on the leaves looks like insect damage. I had Russet mites for a while but caught it early and was able to get by them with some Green Cure, Neem, and Spinosad treatments. Green Cure aint cheap but i think it works. Neem is pretty cheap. I used the Spinosad (Monterey brand) to fight of the Thrips. All organic options.

Do you have a scope or jewelers loop? I have a 100x scope from the hydro store that was cheap. like $15 bucks or so and you can identify the exact culprit that way. check the underside of the leaves. Are you spraying them with anything?

OK, man I never thought it could be bugs, haven't looked to see. But even if its bugs I still don't see why the leaves have such a hard glossy look to them. It's the new leaves which are coming out around the bud sites. Some of the yellow color between the leaf veins I think is from spider or other mites. I sprayed it once with Safer which is a combo of perythrum, ins. Soap, and neem oil. Haven't noticed any lately but I'll check in the morning.

Im pretty sure you have some critters in there. Are you in a Western state?

I spray my outdoor plants with preventitive insect spray twice a week now. Seeing those mites scared the shit out of me. I think the plants really love it though. All but one plant completely recovered. The one that didnt has stunted growth and a little lighter color. I sprayed with Green Cure tonight actually. Takes about an hour to get everything.

Let me know what you find man. Good luck

Alright so I looked, didint see any bugs. Just some old mite damage. I refertilized after a heavy rain about half strength. So just watching it now. So if it's not bugs still don't know why it's stressed. Potassium maybe. I'll try to get some new pics

One option is to go "BOG style", double potting it.

Instead of the stress of full transplant, maybe cut the bottom of the pot off, and let the roots continue doing their thing.

Whether or not you cut the bottom of the plastic (25 gallon pot) off, the roots will grow out the bottom into the medium below.

A 25 gallon pot is thick plastic, usually. Not so easy to hack off with a utility knife.

Anyway, it works. BOG did it and took pictures of it, that's why we call it BOG style. I think.
