Having 2 carbon filters inline for extra odor controll?

Hi ICMAG!

I whos wondering if i it would be even more sufficient to scrub your scrubbet air twice, before it entering "Real World"?

Reason for me to ask is that all the carbon filters i ever had, would only remove, lets say 80-90% of the smell..
That has ben fine, but iam about to set op in a new place, where smell, even a litle, is a no NO!

So to filter it twice, i thinking of blowing my filtered(first time) air into a small room/box, and then suck the air out of the box thru one more carbon filter. All filters and blowers in the line iam thinking should be same size?
Then the air would get a double scrub threatment;-) but would i achive anything with it? Regarding smell?

Here is my layout for my new place.
Ill be growing 2 tree's, critical from seed. They will be growing in a rdwc(thanks Heath) in a light pattern Like this,
....x.......x...
........0.......
........x......
....x ..0...x.. ( spaced out a litle Nicer)

Where 0 are plants, and x are 250 w hps, and a 400w hps in the midle.

Thanks for any input:huggg:

What kind of filters have you used that only get rid of 80-90% of the smell? Cheapos?

If you get one good filter, sized for the space, with the right fan, you shouldn't have a problem, assuming humidity is under control. Good luck. -granger

Yeah I agree with Granger, about getting one that fits your size. In my opinion I would say you would be better off having one scrub to exaust and another just scrubbing general air in th room if you are going to go with 2 though.

Well i have used cheap filters before, but upgrated to rhino's last couple of runs.
Carbon filters Can not remove all smell, no matters if its done correct, not 100%. Iam looking to get as clean air as possible, i Well put an scrubber inside as well thanks.

what granger said Xs 2.

if your still smelling stuff it can be a under sized scrubber, cheap filter or Rh too hi as granger pointed out.

other probs can be a leaky air system where odor gets in down stream from the filter
scrubber--->air cooled lites--->fan---> outside

scrubbing air in a tent or room without sufficient neg air pressure inside the enclosure
mis matched fan/scrubber,

your fan may be pulling air too fast over the carbon and not letting it scrub the air completely

I bought a can50 the only time Ive ever smelled anything has been on start up after lites out,
and what i got at the exhaust is a 1/2 second whiff of something strange, but not canna

add ozone to exhaust.....smell gone 100%.... altho, ozone can be a tell tale sign too for those in the know...

Allright thank you guys for input!

Ill deff set up an fan and scrubber inside growroom too.

So what do you Think of growing tree style, but with only 250 and 400w? Will i end up with a Big plant with small floffy flowers becourse of too little light intensety?

odor control and heat control is where everyone ends up cutting corners because the upfront costs are high. just use 1 system and go a couple inches bigger and dial it back with speed control. you will have less anxiety because it will be quiet and when there's a heat wave you have something extra in you pocket to keep your girls healthy.

i'd run 3 600's before 4 -250's and a 400 if you are looking to grow a tree. all those extra ballasts throwing off heat. my 2 cents. good luck. I use a 12" with a huge carbon filter to cool a 3000w bare bulb setup. fresh night air cooled.

Thanks.
Well i Can Only use limetet amuond of power, 2k all in all is my limet. I know that 600w gives the penetration needed for growing trees, but i alllso Think that atleast 3 sides of vert light is needed, so iam trying to find some kind of way to make that happen:)

So know iam thinking of putting all my eggs in one basket, and do only 1 plant, and hoppefully making it Big enough to yeld as 2.
Then light will be 2x400w plus 1x600w so theres still watt's left for ventilation and ozone.

Regarding smell, i will make a room after my carbon extracted air, and purge ozone in there to kill any smell that migh still be there. Something like this.

The 2 exhoust at the end is for noize reduction. Allso iam thinking of maybe it not nesesery for last extractor?

Last thing i forgot to mention, is the room iam building will be made out of EDPM plastic, "welded" together for smell and airproof apartment.:)

I dont know how to edit my post, but what i wonted to say whos " edpm for an airproof grow room, and a smell free apartment.
Cheers

as the pig said above,
if fan noise is an issue, over size the fan and put it on a speed controller
its also a great way to insure the scrubber does its job by not pulling ait too fast over the carbon

personally If your going sealed up tite like that,
I'd be popping a C02 tank in there and forget about exhaust,
just scrub the air inside the room at the most.
you'll get a lot of benefits w/Co2...

like getting the biggest fattest floppy ass'd nugz is you ever had :bigeye:

just recirculate the air - and exchange it with the veg area. Use passive air intakes to pull it back into the flower from veg.

picture.php

The larger filter in the flowering room simply circulates the air with a 10" can max fan. The filter in the back room (drying / processing) uses a 6" fan to exhaust into the veg room. Darkroom louvers are used as passive intakes in both instances - to draw air into the drying room...and to draw air from the veg room back into the flowering room.

The whole thing is completely sealed - with no exchange of outside air. Ductless A/C and Co2 burner. The air is just in a constant state of movement and exchange between the rooms and always being filtered. No smell.

The above is just a visual to demonstrate the principle.

they way heath would do it in some of his later grows here was to use a relay to switch the output of a ballast between two bulbs for 6 hours each. there's a thread about it here on IC.

so if you had 3-600's you could have 6 bulbs. basically similar to having a light mover.

I don't know what kind of filter you used but from my experience a filter removes all the odor. I think your filters didn't have enough of capacity maybe. Here is a small formula you can use to get the proper exhaust fan and filter.

1. Determine the capacity of the exhaust fan: count the wattage of all bulbs and multiply them by 1.20. So:
250 + 400 * 1.2 = 730m3

2. For the filters there are two ways to do calculate this:

formula 1 = capacity of exhaust fan * 1.2 which is
730m3 * 1.2 = 876m3

formula 2 = capacity of exhaust fan * 0.6 which is
730m3 * 0.6 = 438m3

As you can see if you use the first formula you need a bigger filter the main pros of this one is the filter wich last longer, less noise, the cons it will cost you more and the higher the capacity of the filter the heavier it is.

The second formula works too and I know many people who use this calculation for their growrooms. The pros are the filter is lighter, cheaper. Cons: needs to be replaced faster (I recommend every time when you start a new round), makes more noise.

I myself use the first formula, I had a tent in my room and never smelled anything during the blooming period. I had a strain with a strong odor, when I tool the plant out from my tent I swear you could smell it 6 blocks away so the filter did it's job pretty good. I wish you good luck!

I now run 2 fans inline

I also wanted to be absolutely stealth.

At first I had a cheap Goblin carbon filter, with 6" vortex powerfan, and silencer. Once the filter started being innadequate, I bought a Mountain Air 6"flange x 20"long filter, and placed it after the silencer.

It eliminates between 95 and 100% of the smell. A tiny ozone generator takes care of the stragglers, but as if right now I think having it on is just slightly overkill.

My fan is also on a controller, and I keep it around 50%.

If you want pics everything is on my grow's thread.

kid, I dont know you at all, but if you value your freedom than u will listen:

1st. NOBODY in this world can tell you what is good and not good for you OR if you need or not
2nd. the hard part where no kid on this site has told you BUT first lets think of the following scenario:

...one filter(the one that all from here use it +/- size), u plant...and u dont smell anything(not to mention that at an point u will get used of the air) and a stupid neighbor has a more "refined" nose that others(every person is different, thats why I have a bigger Dhick than most from here) and he will call the idiots and they knock at your door(be happy if u live alone, if parents r involved...), my question is:-->WTF u tell them? u excuse urself cause u have only 1 filter? AAAAAAND when u are in the car with the idiots, in 1 fraction of a second it will come thru ur head the following: --> MTF's & why did i listen to those shmuks

conclusion: --> if you dont live in a country/state that alows u to grow the shit & VALUE ur freedom and u like to meet ur friends, fwuck womens go to strip clubs, concerts and open air festivals partys and many more cool things that in prison u cant find them theeeeeeeeen YOU F USE PRECAUTION AS MUCH AS U NEED

.....and yes, it will come with some extra costs BUT worth

and if you dont believe me then visit a friend(if you have) in prison and I can tell you 1000% that if its the first time u do a visit ur heart will start pumping adrenaline and when u arrive you will be bit pale and more scenarios will come into your head, i just named 1

if ppl cant smell the shit then its less concerns, the less ppl know about the more COCKY u walk

stay high and watch where you fly, peace Y

yup , thats exactly what i do . i have my big can 100 scrubbing the exhaust & I have 2 can lite 8" x 24" with 8" can fans in the room just scrubbing the air in the room . i'm in the same boat , no stink can be smelled outside the room & this scenario works fine ! :tiphat:

picture.php

the 3rd one is behind the bigger plants . all 3 are on the opposite end from my intake so that airs being pulled across the plants then scrubbed & pushed out through the lights by the big filter . the other 2 scrub the room air .

Rasmus,
Your drawing with the box with 2nd filter should work well, provided humidity is not too high, and you use quality filters, and everything is sealed air tight. Don't pinch pennies on the filters. The best, IMNSHO, is Phresh or Mt. Air. I don't see the necessity, but if it lets you sleep well at night the 2nd filter set up is worth the money and effort. First removes 95%+ odor. 2nd filter removes 95%+ of the remaining 5%.
Good luck. -granger
