I will be planting a few plants outdoors under the beautiful Texas sun soon and would like to use coco as an admendment or possibly strait coco in 1 spot that I can hand water

So what i am looking for is advice on both if anyone has any input

Ono, this year I'm going to do my outdoor grow in straight coco, too. I can hardly wait! Gonna put out clones come early May and will ultimately transplant to three-gallon pots...if everything goes well I hope to get some fat trees out of the deal. My only concern is the prospect of going through a lot of expensive nutes.

Anyway, yeah, check out Bonecarver's thread--it's a good one.

ty guys I will check out the thread...

I want to get clones out by mid March here.... I am also concerned about the amount of nutes it might take, that is why I was asking about using it as an admendment so I could use my old organic compost method ... but I do have a spot I could feed/water 1 plant daily... I would most likely use CNS17 grow/bloom on that one... @ $25 a gallon.. I figure for $50-75 I can get the single plant through the season......

I would sooo love to grow a all coco outdoor beast. I have grown some huge outdoor plants and if I would have hydro fead some of them I can only magine how large they would have gotten

depending on what climate you are in it could be a bad idea. It grows very quickly outside and the coco dries up extremely fast. It sucks down those expensive nutes extremely fast outside. If you are not watering or checking everyday your plants can die very quickly. I only grow in coco and its never really turned out great outdoors. Its meant for indoor growing and its not soil despite how it looks. Try it see what happens but my luck outside with it has been poor. Indoors its the mutha fuckin shit.
Grow in soil if outdoors.

I am in a very warm climate... If I do grow one in 100% coco it will be watered every day.If I use @20ml per gallon I would get 190 gallons of fert from a gallon ... so I bet I could get through the season on 1 gallon of grow and a gallon of bloom... possibly 2 gallons of grow.. so for $75 in ferts I could realize a very nice plant... thats cheaper than the price I would pay for electricity to burn the artificial sun.

Also I am thinking about possibly using a dripper system on it

hehe the part of coco meant for indoor growing is fun :D

coco u can use anywhere u want - as long as u do it right - if the pot gets too dry outside - either transplant to an enormous pot that will hold more water - or install drip etc.

if u cant check on ur plants often - its not a good idea to use it..

but this far i have to say COCO is the BEST outdoor medium i have ever tried.. no jokes.. as long as they recieve the water they need :D even the 10 gallon pots were dry at the end of the day :D

its very important to shade ur pots and to make sure the sun or wind doesnt help drying the coco out.

i must say the experience of growing coco outdoors took the edge of indoor growing.. just cant compare to the sun and hydro in good combo :D

id say buds in coco with lots of sunlight can get maybe 4 x bigger than ur indoor ones - without exadgerating.

the biggest yeilding ones were partly lost due to budrot - because it just got too dense in the tops.. just took a bit of rain to ruin it...

theese plants didnt really recieve any veg at all - they were taken outdoors in beginning of august..

only thing that could improve this is to do it on an higher altitude with even more sun-hours.

the sun kicks ass...

and i want to use it!

thats a 2liter pepsi bottle - a half gallon bottle? :D

thanks for the info BC... I am in the middle of reading your outdoor coco thread

I want to do a full veg outside, from a well rooted clone

then u need to have HUGE containers - go for 20 gallons or more :D get prepared for a record harvest!

its gonna be fun to see how it gets :D u'll have to make a thread mate :D

we wanted to take the plants out earlier - but it took time to find a house with a good patio to rent :D

peace

Coco's amazing insulating abilities will be the greatest aid in growing outdoors in this state, brother. Go for it, it'll be a breeze!

Peace,

try without extra insulation if u want.. we get a lot of heat here - up to 122 fahrenheit or even more. we had to insulate the pots.

best thing u can do is to dig those huge pots down. IMHO

peace :D

Bonecarver, I'd almost be afraid to grow plants in 20-gallon containers of coco because they'd be effin' GIGANTIC. I don't recall from your thread--did you use such large pots?

I'm going to keep the contents of my pots from evaporating by cutting out discs from leftover black and white poly sheeting and just placing them over the exposed part of the pot. White styrofoam would be even better, if I can find enough of it....

What would you think of watering with nutrients and then straight water on an alternating basis? One could save 50 percent on their nute bill by doing so, but obviously not worth it if you end up with hungry plants.

As of this morning, I can also speak to coco's incredible insulating abilities. I wanted to recycle some used stuff. Filled a large baking dish with it and stuck it in the oven for a half hour at 200 F...when I pulled it out, the stuff in the middle wasn't even very hot. I was easily able to handle it.

Heya Guys and Gals... I just got home from digging in my coco cave.... I started making some good progress on it and will be working on it most of this weekend

I was thinking of using half of a 55 gallon plastic drum, i can buy them for 5-7$, then cut them in half and burry it.

I will be using a layer of expanded clay pellets(Hydrontron) to slow the evaperation... it is a job they are very well suited for

On stretching the nutes by alternating feeding...It would work but the plant would not be all it could be. You should give em straight ph'd water once a week or so

the gallon plastic drum is a really good idea!

we used 10-14 gallon pots - and we only vegged about a few weeks.. so if u want to grow all summer - make sure those roots have somewhere to go :D

we are going to go for even bigger container next time :D

for my greenhouse i plant to use huge beds made out of HD styrofoam with about 300 liters each or even more :D

in the pots the roots will grow to the extremes first spreading out - like the roots allways do - and its these roots - the fine ones - that are really temp sensitive. they die if they get over 50 degrees C - :D

the big 100% coco grow is still just a thought I will scout the property and see ifit is really practical for me to grow one so big where I am thinking about doing it.

I also wonder how to tell when such a large mass of coco would need watering... on your patio grow did you feed on a schedule or just as the plants pots lightened?.. on such a big pot or one buried it would be impossible to lift one.

I only have exp in growing outdoors in organic soil mixes, so I only watered 2-3 times a week tops... and a lot of the time only once a week if the were guerilla

good point - we watered pretty much everyday..

its enough to bring the plants out later i guess - and get plants that are more easy to handle - since the coco yields well, u dont have to grow plants that big..

i think you would have to go by feeling - or just feed it as often as u can :D just make sure u dont let it ever get dry :D
