To all of our American friends out there....

Have GREAT 4th of July!

....Celebrating overcoming the struggle of oppression to be a free and independent nation....waay back in 1776.

So lets hear your celebration stories, and quotes from your founding Fathers...

I'll kick the ball off with a quote or three from Benjamin Franklyn:

“It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority.”

“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”

''Our new Constitution is now established, everything seems to promise it will be durable; but, in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.''

At it's inception American Independence was a very beautiful event, that heralded a huge change in thinking of how a civil society could be and should be. So much has gone wrong since, I must agree.

But for today, lets try and concentrate on what your founding Fathers meant for it to be, and perhaps what it could again become one day again. (Oh yes, I am forever the optimist).

“Slavery is such an atrocious debasement of human nature, that its very extirpation, if not performed with solicitous care, may sometimes open a source of serious evils. The unhappy man who has been treated as a brute animal, too frequently sinks beneath the common standard of the human species. The galling chains, that bind his body, do also fetter his intellectual faculties, and impair the social affections of his heart… To instruct, to advise, to qualify those, who have been restored to freedom, for the exercise and enjoyment of civil liberty… and to procure for their children an education calculated for their future situation in life; these are the great outlines of the annexed plan, which we have adopted.

[For the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, 1789]”
― Benjamin Franklin,

Oh....lol, thanks for that SFL...

I'll just sip on my cup of un-taxed tea while I ponder on that, and cast another quote from the great man himself...Ben Franklyn (who by the way was a grower of our favorite plant).

“Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools that don't have brains enough to be honest.”
― Benjamin Franklin

In a few minutes I am going down to the beach (it's 7:30 AM) before the traffic on the beach road gets bad. Set up a chair and a small cooler with some water, watch all the pretty girls in their red white and blue bikinis and frolic in the 85 degree water. The surf report shows no real waves but I'll bring my board just in case. Around noon I will wander up to the beach bar and get a cold beer. Later, my son is having a get together at his place with food and more beer. There will be massive fireworks in my neighborhood tonight where I will fall asleep with the flashes and the noise streaming through my windows.

Freedom. That is the gift we were given. Use it well.

Franklin, when asked about the events at the conclusion of the constitutional convention, what form of government have you given us

" A republic, if you can keep it"

Ahhh...us yanks do call July 4th Independence Day, but many Brits I know also call it "Thanksgiving Day".

I realize many people view USA as fucked up place to live, but the fact of the matter is--the waiting line to ENTER this county is much larger...than the exit line.

Given the choice of "free will" (freedom) or "fatalism" (preordained)...I choose "free will".

There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance

A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will

Help a stoner out. When did the 4th of July replace Independence Day as what the day is called?.. and why?

I will do like I've done since I was big enough to hold a punk, lite firecrackers and safely run away. (4yrs old) I still have all my fingers  Make lots of noise with colorful flashes of light.

Have a Safe and Fun Independence Day! :woohoo:

Happy Fourth, Everyone.

Good one GS,a true hero to be sure!I was a sixteen year old longhair in Wash DC in 1976 when the country put on the largest fireworks display on July 4th to that date for the bi-centennial,it must have lasted three hours or more. And to be sure the entrance line far exceeds the voluntary exit line by a huge margin I believe. For all the faults there are more advantages than disadvantages to being a U.S citizen.

taxation without representation , tyranny ,and the dictatorship of king George III , this is why some of my ancestor's fought in the Revolutionary war . The Declaration of Independence , and the Constitution help preserve our freedoms written by some of the greatest men of all history. America is still the Greatest country on earth , a shinning example for the rest of the world .
