i just got a hannah HI98129 and i wanted to check to make sure it is working okay.. i turned it on and its saying my PPM out of reverse osmosis is 422.. i than went to PH and it starts at 12 and than goes down to low 7s over the course of a minute or so... 11.9, 11.78, 11.55, 11.49, etc, etc.. it doesnt get to a definite PH and stop.. it keeps fluctuating is this normal?

the reverse osmosis part... not normal.. that should be in the low teens to close to 0.

The pH.. yeah, thats normal.. my reader fluctuates like that too. What I do usually is just swirl it in small circles in the liquid until it reaches a +/-.05 average and just use that. If yours fluctuates by 1 or even half a point back and forth, I'd worry.

Also make sure that your reverse osmosis IS working correctly. Are your filters still filtering? Are you sure youre not just high and testing tap water? You sure you didn't piss in the water before testing it? :) 442 is very hard water.

Like Marx2k said, the pH fluctuation thing is perfectly normal. It takes a while to get a definitive reading, which for me took about 30 seconds when I had the hanna pen, but after that it would stay in and around +/- 0.3 pH.
If it was still fluctuating an entire 1 pH level, I'd worry. You have to remember that the molecules in the water are constantly moving, so the reading will vary a little bit. Ya know?

As for the ppm, like marx2k said, that ain't normal. Check your ro machine or take the water somewhere else that has a reliable pH meter and check it there to compare.

Water is classified as hard > 300 ppm
After running through a RO machine, you should be in the 0-30 ppm range.

G'luck,

alright thanks for the heads up.. i am going to take my filters off tomorrow and put new ones in, i have been using them for a year and 4 months and haven't cleaned or changed them.. i think that may be part of the problem.

filters may be dirty and or need changing.. definately checked my r/o water and normal tap water...both about the same, tap is 440ppm and ro is 420 ppm..both have about the same PH.

would 440ppm be alright on well water?? or is that still out of normal standards?

It just means you have water with a high calcium content (hard water) ... unless you have dirty water, but usually if it's coming from the tap, there's some sort of city or county making sure that theyre not just pumping wter through a fecal filter and throwing it in your tap

Wow man... 440 is pretty darn high but I guess it's possible. I suppose with well water it could be in those ranges.

Just curious - did the pen calibrate with pH and TDS solutions? If ya didnt, I'd highly recommend it... I'd also recommend instead of running out and dropping the cash for filters you could pickup a gallon of distilled water... if that doesnt read 0 then your pen is hosed (assuming you calibrated).

One other thing, the pH will start out reading based on the temp it detects the water at. So you'll see the temp start at 75 and then go down/up - while the temp is changing so will the TDS/pH readings. Wait long enough and it will stop fluctuating... but who the fuck has time for that :)

I wish I had 440ppm water! Mine is 815ppm last time I checked
It's almost all lime and calcium.

Absolutely every piece of cutlery, glass, dish, and esp. dog bowl is covered in the stuff. I have to take my shower head off every two months and soak it in CLR or Lime-Away because it gets completely clogged. Nasty stuff, eh?

Hope you get your water sorted out though. I thought I'd chime in and tell you that 440ppm isn't the worst out there

damn.. thats pretty rough.. i hope my filters for my Ro are dirty because there isnt much difference between tap and r/o water.. i would expect the RO to make a huge difference but in this case its maybe 20ppm

If I remember right, you should calibrate them right when you get them and periodically. I think it says how often in the directions if you have them. Personally I do mine every couple weeks. Hope that helps.

Also, if you have very hard water, or if you have weak water pressure (lots of time due to very hard water) you need to make sure that the RO system is being fed from the water supply at a good psi, otherwise the system is innefective.
