Half-baked phone scam or ...?

I'm pretty confused and seeing as it is three in the morning the only other person online I know that I explained this situation to is also confused.

Basically what happened is I get an IM from someone I had never talked to before. Here's a transcript of the conversation, with my screenname and his replaced.

other guy (2:45:39 AM): call me
me (2:45:48 AM): hmmm
other guy (2:46:01 AM): 949 292xxxxx
other guy (2:46:03 AM): hurry g
me (2:46:07 AM): cause i know who this is
other guy (2:46:16 AM): u do
other guy (2:46:17 AM): so call
me (2:46:20 AM): who is tis
me (2:46:21 AM): this*
other guy (2:46:23 AM): u will see
other guy (2:46:25 AM): call
me (2:46:29 AM): god dammit
other guy (2:46:49 AM): waiiiittt i gave u the wrong number!!ughhhh 949 933 xxxx
other guy (2:46:51 AM): sorry
me (2:46:56 AM): ok
me (2:47:00 AM): gonna go find my phone
me (2:47:06 AM): this is ****ing weird by the way
other guy (2:47:27 AM): lol
other guy is away at 2:47:34 AM.
me (2:49:25 AM): ...

Auto response from other guy (2:49:25 AM): Chores then school
man this shit aint cool

i just wanna party
i just wanna toke up

I just wanna go buck wild
I DONT GIVE A ****

me (2:49:28 AM): what the **** is this
me (2:49:31 AM): i hung up
me (2:51:56 AM): who the **** are you
me (2:52:56 AM): ..........

Keep in mind that I live in Charlotte, NC, and this call (according to a reverse lookup) was made from Newport beach CA.

I called the number, just maybe thinking it was a friend of mine who had moved out to California. His name was Mike and we were in high school together, we hadn't talked since 2004 so I thought maybe he found an e-mail I had sent him with my AIM name in it or something like that. Basically I was giving this the benefit of the doubt that it may be a legit person wanting to talk to me. But why ask me to make a ****ing long distance phone call.
So I get a 2nd opinion on whether or not I should call and my buddy Jon says go for it. So I do.
What happens next is mind boggling. It says, please stay on the line as your party is being reached. Then it starts playing "Who let the dogs out". I hung up.

I get called back and my phone says private number. I answer it, and its some kid who is just very at ease and is talking to me like I know him.

"Whats up man"
Uhhh hey who is this?
"Huh? Dude are you serious you dont know who this is? come on dude...."
No.. refresh my memory? This is a California number, right?
"haha no man"
Yes it is, I looked it up.
"uhhh"
*click*

What the ****?
Anyone know what the **** just happened? Is it some idiot trying to get me to call and "wait while my party is reached" and listen to who let the dogs out or the thong song and get a huge phone bill? Or someone in CA just get my AIM s/n somehow and just decide to **** around?
I'm very, very confused.

never call those numbers unless you're sure

there was a scam last year (using caribbean island based phone numbers i believe_ that charged an outrageous per minute fee once someone called a number that was texted to them. basically steals your money semi-legally

That's very stupid of you to call that. You should just ignore the IM , i get so many weird shit going on in AIM ...

However, it's ****ed up , i have no idea where they would get your IM anyways.

You might get a large surprise on your next phone bill. Some scams are just to get you to call a number then, wham!

Pretty much why I do not answer the phone
If someone is looking for me, they better know my cell number or they get nothing

Irish is exactly right! NEVER call any numbers you're not sure of these days. That phone scam from the Caribbean also used actual 1-800 numbers to make you think the call was free. Actually the telephone call WAS free, the attched fee (unknown to you) for the service you were 'buying' was the way they were able to bill out those calls for crazy $$$$$.

I am pretty naive in certain situations like these. I don't expect some 16 year old kid to be running a phone scam op from his cell phone, though

Never call like that... you may very well end up with some long ass phone bill. Hopefully you will not but i wouldn't be suprised, alot of that shit is going on and no one seem's to stop it, alot of outsider's ripping folks off on the telephone.. be careful.
