I'm afraid I must agree with Stephen Hawkings bleak outlook on contact with a superior race of beings.Although unfortunate,it's totally natural for an advanced species to wholly dominate a lower form of life,and natural life includes alien species.Nasa is caught up in the "weird life" furor right now,I fear first contact won't be with "weird life" at all but with normal life that will totally dominate us.Its only natural.

Then using your/hawkins logic it's safe to assume that we are safe. Had the 'Aliens' really been here they would already have used the last 60 years to dominate us. As that has not happened, and sticking to your logic, it would therefore be safe to assume that either we are the only lifeforms of our type around/ the other races are not ahead of us as they too have not left their planet or, finally, they are far enough away not to have found us yet.

Whichever the case we are quite safe.
