what's the deal with the little "diddies" he does in the beginning of the solos for Rock n Roll and Black Dog? He does simple stupid hammer-ons way down on the 2nd and 3rd frets with the fat-ass E or A strings, and it's like incredibly fucking fast. It's so fast that when I read the tab and try it, I'm only able to keep pace randomly hammering - but the tabs show an actual progression behind the little hammering action. Does anyone play a lot of Zeppelin and know what I'm talking about? Before those two solos (for ROck n Roll and Black Dog) there's fast hammer-ons and pull-offs that happen so fast it isn't really possible to understand what you're actually doing - where the melody of it is going.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not a total clown at guitar, I've been playing for 10+ years....I just CAN'T figure out how Page is doing it. I think he was just doing his thing, throwing in a nice little fill-in before the main jist of the solos comes in. So, in essence, it really can't be reproduced - because I think even Page himself can't reproduce it. Or maybe not. I think I've heard live versions of both songs and he still does the little fill-in low fret hammer-on/pull-off jingo at the beginning of the solos.
Fuck man. I think it's from learning the scales properly. Maybe once I learn get the scales like ingrained into my brain I'll be able to just go with the flow and be able to combine speed with knowledge of where exactly the thing is going.
