growing in the socal dezert going all out for yeilds

:tiphat:Welcome to my first thread here on IC:tiphat:

A LITTLE ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to growing, have been doing so off and on since i was about 15. indoors, i have done a few simple indoor grows, with air cooled 1000s and always in dirt, with mixed results, my best numbers were over 3 lbs from one 1k raptor, and a 600 batwing. Thats multiple plants and alot of tlc and time, they werent small.
I helped run a mobile home with 6 1000watters all batwing, and over 200 plants, i set the whole thing up, but we ended up pulling the plug on that one. Due to security issues. Outdoors, i have done one or two here and there, never a real crop, km looking to change that NOW.

now for my questions
So i have to move, i have decided i am moving into the desert, because i can afford a good size piece of land there. I am looking at 10 acres.

My thoughts are:
2 car garage with 6k flower setup, t5 veg room maybe keep 20 flowering plants all the time. This alone should be pretty promising, was looking at og#18 from seed or a local top notch og cut.

now for the outdoor situation

Im familiar with the norcal way of growing, hoopies and smart pots, i have already decided smart pots are OUT. Think im going to do holes, lined with chicken wire on the floor of the hole and getting some cattle fencing (its like a 4 or 5 inch metal grid that comes in rolls about 6 feet high)and lining the diamater of our holes with it, to protect underground from gophers or whatnot and it would out of the hole about 3 feet, to protect from rabbits or whatever.
Going to build up a "bowl" around each hole to hold water in to speed up watering.
I havent decided on sizing of the holes, but am thinking as far as plant numbers
There will be 3 people living here with recs, and im thinking 18 just so at least the outdoor will totally be within limits, hopefully the indoor doesn't get bothered with, although i will have recs to cover those also.
Im thinking about doing hoopies, for those that dont know this is just simple plastic tarp and pvc pipe tunnel type greenhouses, i was thinking about swapping plastic for shade cloth IF temps hover above 95 or so, maybe even hanga box fan or two at the ends?? As far as watering goes im hoping to use the tap at the property maybe setup a tank also. As far as nutez on the outdoor, was honestly thinking about gro more, though i hat3 that crap. They do have a "marine" version that had a lil better numbers. Also im looking for ideas on what strain to run outside, something hella dense, easy to trim, good yeild, preferably kushy. Also what are your thoughtz on soil mix? I think soilless mix indoorz but outside not sure, lots of water crystalz lol whatever i use right?

What are your thoughts on this? Sounds like a halfdecent plan to me...

Thanks for ANY INPUT!!!

Being in the desert, I for see temps well above 100. Hell I'm norcal and I get up to 120 in the summer.
Also being in the desert, I'd imagine the soil is lots of sand or atleast doesn't retain moisture. is I'm not sure why you would dig holes over smart pots. I have holes so it's not because I'm biased. As far as keeping gophers out, u need to use 1/2inch hardware cloth. Gophers can fit through chicken wire.
Water crystals? Don't think it's necessary if ur in a backyard. Just put that shit on a drip system and water every day.
Nutrients, growmore isn't terrible. Just flush well. Also it will kill beneficial microbes, so don't waste money on that if ur using "blue juice".
Strains? Kush never performed well outdoors for me (personal opinion). But sour diesel does yield well but is a bitch to trim. It really depends on your market. If they want "ass rape Bloody Mary kush" then grow that. Local dispensaries, and get clones.

Thanks for the input jackel.
Reason im thinking holes, is keeping the rootzone cooler, i may run WHITE smarties, also kind of like the portable factor the smarties create. Thanks for the tip on the hardware cloth, when i looked at the chamber of commerce website for that community it said temps hover around 100, in the hottest months, not sure if i believe that. Lol as far as strains go, i just want something that has that og kind of funk to it, i have heard they do terrible outside, so im hoping for a nice og hybrid, i can get og×querkle, but thinking i wanna run that indoors not out, was almost thinking a crack × og cross, anyone know of one personally?

Good luck growing in the desert. I've been doing it since 78 and it has taken many years to dial in just how to grow effeceintly in the extreme heat. I still find myself asking questions about which strains to use because everything changes all the time and I don't ever want to use a stale gene pool. J 54

Having them with a little shrub shade might help. Agreed....watering a hole...in sandy loam....it's fruitless...literally. Having them in a container, THEN dug in the ground you do have water reaching the roots and not evaporating totally.

Agree with the wire mesh UNDER the root ball and around it if gophers, skinks ...shiny hissing little (or big) lizards! HATE THEM!

I've grown in high mountain desert...gets to be 105 on summer days. Having a hose buried and watering on a schedule (twice a day....early morning, late evening) helps.

Found no discernible difference between indicas or sativas in HEAT. They'll either prosper (with your exceptional eye, noticing problems)....or they'll shrivel up and blow away. I feel ya, no matter.

GOOD LUCK! Also, autoflowers...reaping 4-7 harvests in the time it takes for photoperiod might be a good way to go. Or put in your photoperiods around solstice...still plenty of time to reap a harvest by Sept into mid Oct....and hopefully a few monsoons to aid in the watering.

Hey Mojave Green you have the same name as my tortise!!!! I just want to know when did San Berdoo county outlaw outdoor grows??? I live down in the Coachella Valley and this is the first I have heard of it. I deal with Disc. Hydro and am there at least twice a week sometimes to cop supplies and other times just to rap with the staff. I'm surprised that they never said anything about it. There are tons of outdoor grows in the valley from backyard to semi large grows. I've been visited by the man several times over the years and they have always found me Prop. 215 compliant. They just don't want to have anyone growing SHRUBS where they can be seen by John Q. Public. in there front yard. Let me hear your story about life up the hill. I know several growers who live up in Morongo Valley and Yucca and they never said any bad shit to me. J 54 :plant grow::plant grow:

"within the unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County."

Is that the key word here? Sounds like they are saying you can grow outdoors in the incorporated areas of SB county?

incorporated areas are governed by the cities in whose jurisdiction they are in.

I am also setting up a outdoor grow in Riverside co. this year... it willl be minimal set-up, probably just use 99 30gal smarties and put clones out in june or july. No shadecloth at that location although it is a good idea for desert growing.

You didnt mention how big your pots will be but if you are only growing 18 plants you probably want at least 1-2 yards of soil per plant. Where do you get white smartpots? Also i have heard of a good OG hybrid ya should PM me

We're ordering some tan Geopots for our OD this year. 30gal is about $14...

Desert grows: My boys in NM pulled mad weight in the noonday shade, and capitalizing off the dawns and dusky light, all in bags. With the heat I'd just as well avoid using salt based nutes and go with ewc, especialy since youll want to digest the calcium effectively. Foliar feed at night. Watch the evening winds, reach 40 mph easily. For a strain I'd use a short squat ridge top variety like Willies, Affy, Lavender, Maple Leaf, Black Domina, Durban Marley's Coli Hash plant, There a mt og from the Temecula clubs that's been tried in the deserts, did ok low care.....not a bad girl I'll keep her around fo sho. It was mad seedy but when I'd pack it up for folks I always got the "whoa whats that" lol
