Flushing the coco before use is a good idea if it is cheap or poor quality. Feed every watering and you should be fine. Flushing really only needs to be done if a problem arises. Try to shoot for a little runoff and remove if possible. You can also flush monthly if you feel the need.
Start with low dose ferts (1/4 strength of recommended dose) and work up from there.
Check out the coco section for more info.

What about overwatering...does it happen?

If you have a small plant in a bunch of coco you can over-water. Most people growing in coco tend to use smallish containers for larger pants. With big plants in small pots it is impossible to over-water.

FWIW I use an organic coco based soil-less mix. I treat it exactly like I would soil.

There are a lot of ways to use coco. Coco is 50% of my mix, with the remainder being perlite (30%), and castings (20%). I don't water in any fertilizers, pH my water, or "flush", but the chem coco growers usually pH their nutrient solution to 5.8-6.0.

Just castings aye? I am currently doing my last run in soil now. I am switching to coco on my next run. I stopped using nutes a couple crops ago and started brewing vermipost teas and love it. You ever make tea? Or heard of peeps using act in coir?

Not just castings. I'm over a year now using the same mix continuously in a tote without tilling. The original mix also had bat guano, kelp, and dolomite lime (ala LC's #1 mix). Over time I've top dressed more guano, castings, alfalfa and comfrey meals, some gypsum, in addition to returning non-consumable material from harvested plants (leafs, stems, popcorn buds after running trough bubble bags).

I use tea (castings, emulsions, kelp, molasses) on an as needed basis.
