Growing in a garbage can!

Alright, so I need a new chamber, because I want to have a mother and be able to take clones and stuff while I'm flowering. I don't really have any more room for furniture in my bedroom, and I don't want it to be in the living area, so what will I do? Well, I've got some closet space that I'm not using, so I decided to turn a garbage can into a veg chamber. It hasn't been put to use yet, but I see no reason for it not to work. Since it will only be for veg, I'm not bothering with filtering the odor or making it 100% lightproof.

I'll be using a Rubbermaid 30~ gallon trash can, green with a tan lid. I got this from WalMart for $10 maybe? Somewhere around there I think. I then bought two mylar blankets from WalMart for less than $2 each. These provided more than enough material to quadruple layer around the inside of the garbage can. I did this for two reasons. The first, so the whole thing doesn't glow. I forgot to do the top, and it looks ridiculous, but where I put the mylar, it looks like a regular old trash can.

For my lights, I've got four 15w CFLs, 6400k. The garbage can is about 1.5' across, which leaves me with appx 1.75 sq feet. With the 60w of light I have, that's 35wpsf of light, perfect for vegging. (I use 50wpsf for my flowering cabinet.)

For ventilation, I'm using a 120mm computer fan. It's rated at 47cfm, is blowing completely unrestricted, and is absolutely silent. I feel that this fan will be sufficient ventilation, as I don't need to push through light traps or carbon filters. There is a 4"x8" rectangle cut out on the bottom of the garbage can to act as passive intake. (Intake area = 32sq in)(Exhaust area = 17.5sq in~) I was shooting for intake=exhaust*2, it should be close enough. I doubt the 60w of CFLs will produce much heat at all.

I've got a wooden 2"x1" punched through the cover. The wires and lights hang off of this.

And here it is, up and running. It's been on for about half an hour now, and the temperature inside stays at ambient, so it looks like the ventilation is sufficient. I've got six seeds germing, so I should be getting some plants in there shortly. If you've got any questions, I'd be glad to help.

Note: Edited a few pictures due to my own paranoia.

Home Depot. Plugs right into a 2-prong socket. IIRC it ran ~$2. You could get a "Y" as well, that screws into a socket.

The entire lighting setup can be found at WalMart in the aisle with or near the light bulbs. I spent $20 tonight, but I'd say about $10 of it was for the lighting setup. $4~ for the cord, $1.25 each for the plug in light socket, and like $2 each for the socket expander things between the light sockets and the extension cord. Everything except the PC fan, the 12v converter, and the piece of wood can be found at WalMart. I used some foil tape, but that could be easily substituted with Duct Tape.

Edit: I was looking to get two of the "Y" adapters, but WalMart didn't seem to carry them. I know Home Depot does though. Since there were no "Y" adapters at WalMart I ended up getting the socket splitter and individual plug in sockets.

can you say fire hazard??

I would not feel too confortable if I were to grow in that. Be very carefull. Keep in mind that there is plastic all around that melts at rather low temps.

They're 15w CFLs, you can hold them in your hand as long as you want after they've been on for days at a time and not feel any pain. Plus, the air is exchanged about 10 times each minute, and the temperature inside stays at ambient.

There aren't any updates, I'm seedless and cloneless at the moment. I'm hoping to either get a local "headies" clone, or figure out a safe address and put in a seedbay order.

well i dont take credit for this design, but i saw something similar awhile back and i cant seem to find it. soo.. here is something i quickly came up with from what i can remember from the design.

well the plan is to vertical scrog it, giving a chance for all the lower branches to get some light. you could do two plants or one just train it to grow in a spiral around the chicken wire then when your ready to flower all your bud should grow towards the center of your container.

Yeah, topher - that's the tube/barrel/box of green approach essentially. A few different variations on the idea of been done (that Czech guy - was it g_man? - with a 150w HPS), but it's probably the most ergonomically efficient design for a microgrow... if not any grow. Minimal wasted space and maximized yield area, the name of the game!

I've seen light fixtures for 60w incandescents that come with a plastic cover. Then people put 100w incandescents in there and really heat them up. No I would say smoking your bud is more of a fire hazard. I really like the cheap light fixture. I thought of using compact flourescents and imagined attaching light fixtures to a board and wiring them all up. DUH!
