Just thought i would ask you fellas your opinions on these two growing mediums. I haven't grown for a few years but back in the day rock wool was the big thing. But i also have mates that are growing in perlite with good results.
i havent grown usin rocwool, i may give it a try in the future for cloning, but that is all i would use it for, i have heard some bad stuff about the shit.
It really depend's on the enviroment of the grow room as which is the best method to grow and what is the best medium to use.
Knowing that we want a fast drainning very airy medium for our root's, most what is used today provide's this.
Many have great grow's in 4" block's of RW, seen it used in many system's, but I believe the simplest was drain to waste drip system on the cube's, or a measured hand watering.
Now cost wise, perlite is by far cheaper than RW, but can be a pain to handle and deal with, but I have found tranplanting them when grown in perlite to be easy as one, two, three. Just let it dry up some as it seem's to just fall of the root's, what is left in the root's get's transplanted with the plant. Most alway's they go into a bigger container with more medium and so the perlite does not become an issue.
Now what is best for RW grow's, well I would have to say GH nutrient's work great with RW and a more dryer humidity in the room seem's to be a secret. Also I noticed air movement just above the cube's. I take it this is all about them drying out a bit faster so that they do not remain super moist all the time.
Now some use them as a base for the plant and as a starter for root growth as the 4" block's are set in a system or large ebb/flow tray with hydrotron. The RW is almost sitting on top of the medium allowing root's to grow down and into the medium.
Now what I have found to work great on mold, even green alge on RW cube's, yes spray right on live plant's, they grow fine. I am not sure about spelling as a friend sent this to me, Phenzon 20.
I will ask for the particular's on it from my friend if other's want it.
I use perlite right now in 16oz cup's. I root cutting's and seed's in RW cube's and once root's are visable I place in them in the cup's. A plant can grow and survive for many month's in these cup's. The also can get very tall on you if you just keep giving them food.
Oh yes that Phenzon 20 work's just as good on perlite as RW material. I also spray down and clean the dehumidifier with it and the A/C unit. Actually I spray everything with it as it is a mold killing bacterial fungiside, if my memory serve's my correctly.
Draw back's on both medium's, they both can get a build up of nutrient's in them, so scheduled feeding's, if not flush's, should be done with plain water. I say this and forget to do it alot of the time and lose the mother plant because of it, so do better than me and remember to flush an feed with plain water every few watering's.
I have re used perlite over a few time's, depending on what and how long it was used, and same for RW cube's, but I have alot of used wasted RW material that I had to get ride of, and so far I have not had problem's with the perlite waste, but then I love the flower bed's and my medium once used become's fill dirt for the outside flower bed.
I love competting with the neighbor woman, I do something, they go do it, so now a few place's around me beside my own have flower bed's laced with perlite. It actually look's much better now than before.
Seeing how I have a place for my waste I use a coco fiber mixxed with perlite as a medium to vegy and flower in. This get's so consumed with root's that it is all waste at the end.
but all ways had a prob with the verm ending up at the bottem of the bucket or on the floor. sence then i just used perlite 100% and have no prob's what so ever it dose need watered a lil more then the mix of the 2.
i have never used rockwool (except the clones i get have 1" sq on them)
i have hurd bad thing about rockwool as well as had prob's
1 black mold is allways on the 1" sq after i harvast.
2 hard to flush salts {harsher weed} ( from hear say )
but i have seen great plants from rockwool just never smoked or growen
hope this helps
for clones i now use this after the bubble cloner not rockwool i dont like mold
Over the year's I have learned there are a few thing's you can go with cheaper item's, but all in all one has to be ready to spend the buck's on the girls if you want a nice grow room.
I do not believe in wasting anything, so I squeak when I walk, but it just seemed never to pay for me to go cheap on the girl's.
well i took sum clones last night, i never used rw b4, so i might av fucke it up, the 2 i did in jiffy pellets look ok, whereas the 4 in rw are looking very sad, i dunno wtf is happened to my cloning skilss, wheni 1st started cloning, i hAD 100% SUCCESS R8, AND NOW, IM GETTING CLOSER TO 100% FAILURE, ( soz caps) any1 with experience in rockwool, plz help, pm, thanks.
I make sure to soak my cubes overnight in ph netural water, and add ph up/down if necessary. I also add a tiny bit of organic b1 and superthrive to the bath.
If you are cloning under a flouro, the original overnight soaking will be plenty of moisture for several days if not a week or more, plenty of time for the clones to root, so no watering is necessary. Just clone, throw a humidity dome over and leave them babies alone and come back looking for roots in a few days. 100% everytime
Very interesting thread! So where do you folks stand on a heat mat for cloning. I ask because I believe it helps the whole process but I cant afford a fancy thremostat control for mine yet and bottom heat effects how quickly the clone medium dries out- yes even with a humidity dome. I need some pure science because I want a better than 60% sucess rate for my efforts

Hey 00420 its looks like just you and me using Oasis! The advantages are; no I repeat no ph adjustments necessary, much easier disposal/recycling, better aeration, a case runs about $112 usd for 20 sheets of 104 cubes. And thats without the Mayor McCheese discount! lol I as others set the trays over the flurs lighting the already rooted clones, perfect heat! I used RW for years but was tried of itchy scratchy arms and worrying about ph. Try some Oasis and then you may change too.
