Last summer a friend gave me a clone of unknown origin. I had never grown MJ before and stuck it in a pot in my yard. When fall came and it wasn't done flowering I started to get worried about the cold nights and someone seeing this 3' plant ( I know my neighbour smokes ) and ripping it. I found a broken chest freezer with inside dimentions 2' x 3' x 4'. I stood it up on it's end to get 4' of hight.
An intake vent was cut into the rear bottom and a exhaust into the rear at the top.
I mounted 8 4' fluoro tubes vertically inside two on each side and a 70 watt hps removed from its security light case in the top.a small space heater was added to keep the GrowFridge warm at night
This allowed me to bring my outdoor plant inside for the nights or when it was crappy, rainy fall weather.
after a couple of nights I discovered that the Built in thermostat in the space heater was not very good and my temps were all over. I got hold of a hot tub thermostat and wired it into one line of a 2' extension cord and mounted the sensor end up around the plants Colas. with the temp turned all the way up on the heater the new thermostat turned it on and off and kept the room at a steady temp.
In this way I finished my first grow.
I got just over 1.5 g dried from this plant. I was a little dissapointed but didnt know any better. It looked like about 6g on the plant to me LOL
With grow #1 under my belt I felt great and was ready to start my first full Fridge grow. I managed to get a friend of a friend to agree to give up a clone for a couple $. My plan was to split the fridge into a small veg chamber at the bottom for my clones and a flower area at the top.
I reversed my air circulation so that cool air was blown across the HPS, warming it and circulating it around the fridge before exhausting it out the bottom.
I added a shelf at bottom and sealed it off from the top with spray foam to try and keep the light out of the flower area. The problem was that the glass fluoro tubes spanned both chambers and allowed light to leak through no matter how well I sealed the rest. I added two 2" pvc pipes (with elbows to keep the light out) from the top chamber to the bottom and a mini tower fan. Each cycle of the tower fan blows a blast of air down the tube into the clone chamber, supplying it with warm fresh air.
When the "Clone" arrived it was a 2' tall plant ready to flower. it had had Spider Mites and looked pretty sick. I immediatly cut some clones and once I was sure they were rooted I put it into flower. Two weeks into flower I noticed webs on some of my leaves.....THEY'RE BAAACK...
I managed to get rid of them by blasting them off the leaves in the shower every couple of days for two weeks. and sprayed my clones with Safers Trounce.
Some research on mites taught me that they really like warm dry environments so I went out and purchased a Hygrometer to check my RH. My RH turned out to be about 20% (I should have known this as it is winter and any moisture in the air is frozen). a small cool air humidifier was procured and put in the Fridge. This raised the humidity to 75% during the day but to aprox 100% at night when the lights and cooling fan were off. This issue was solved by adding a furnace humidistat wired into another short extension cord so the humidifier is only powered when the humidistat senses a RH less than I have it set for.
The rest of this grow went pretty much perfectly. the plant did not hermie from the light leaks and me opening the door constantly "just to see it" when it should have been in the dark. and it survived one 12 hr period at 122f 50c
With only minor burnage. I accidentally pulled the cord out of my fan the night before
This round I harvested 2.14 oz dry. much better bud and exactly the amount I was hoping for
With this grow done it was time to make some serious changes and fix my light issues.
Every thing was removed from the fridge including the Fluoro tubes and the lower chamber.
I decided to try a Scrog to maximize my yeald in a small space. It was also decided that I would design me Scrog screens so I could get two side by side in the fridge.
It was my intention to start one now and put the second into flower in 5 weeks then in 5 more weeks #1 should be done and another will take it's place, creating a perpetual harvest.
I plan on using CFL's for the clone chamber and upgrading to a 400w HPS for flower.
In anticipation of the 400w upgrade I built a cooltube and mounted it with a Quickie Pizza Box reflector ( I know Fire hazard I'll change it)
Look great dude. I am happy to see some back dated pictures of the whole history of the fridge. LOL , I can't wait to see what this thing is gonna produce. Great to see innovative stuff happening...so bland to see people growing in rubbermaid containers over and over again.
This is how the fridge looks at the moment
All lights are on 24/0 at this point as I have no heater in there right now.
The center partition can be moved down to accomidate the plant growing.
The large pot down below contains the plant I just chopped in Jan. I cut it down and left it in the garage for a week in the freezing cold. I went out to clean the fridge and found it still alive, so I put it back under the lights to reveg. I'm going to stick it outside as soon as it's warm enough
