Got busted, whats next?

I spent about 3/4 a day in jail, but I ate a friend's weed brownies before heading in and enjoyed it. Anyways, I got caught with minor consumption (2 drinks before heading to jail), possession, and maintaining a common nuisance. I figure I'll get a lawyer for $500 and try and beat some charges. They want me to rat out some dudes and a couple guys have stolen money from me, should I turn them to lose the charges? I'm drunk and high for the last time in a while and wanted to know what you guys thought.

here the drinking and possession are both just tickets, misdemeanors if you're unlucky. don't know about the nuisance one, but it shouldn't be too serious

i'm not in your position, but here's my opinion.

Unless you're planning on gettin out of the area or staying completely to yourself and never again engaging in any illegal activity, Don't flip on people. If you do, more than likely, it will come back at ya. Even if you didn't really do anything, people can still fabricate stuff to get you looked at.

It sounds like you weren't really charged with too much real stuff. THough it seems like a lot, a decent lawyer should get it knocked down to 30-60 hours of community service (as long as what you were charged with possessing was relatively small). I don't know your state either, but check out the NORML site for your local laws (double check with your lawyer, some info is outdated). A lot of places have decriminalized smaller amounts so you basically get a traffic ticket and a fine for a few hundred dollars. Unless you're a complete asshole to the judge, refuse to wear a suit to court, or don't get a lawyer, you should be able to get just a few hours of community service for the underage drinking and maybe a license suspension.

Be willing to pay a hefty fine to the court and about 700-1000 for a pretty good lawyer, then act as ashamed and sincerely apologetic as possible, and finally do a little community service and stay out of trouble for a while. You miiiiight get probation.

Bottom line, unless you're in a pretty harsh state its really not going to be that bad, and you might even be able to get it expunged from your record if you don't get in any more legal trouble for a certain number of years.

If you were supplying alcohol to minors, dealing, in possession of a large amount, or really really pissed off a friend of the judge/DA, you would be in more trouble.

Good luck with the court case. And remember, lots of cash spent now is waaaay better than something on your record so get a good laywer and be willing to pony up that hefty fine i mentioned.

^^^ What he said. Get a good lawyer, go to your court date early and IN A SUIT, with a haircut and be clean-shaven. You can buy a new suit with alterations and tie for $150 from Men's Wearhouse or S&K.

If it's at all possible, try to get the drug and drug-related charges dropped. Getting convicted of any drug charges gets reported to the FBI and will affect you for the rest of your life if you plan on ever owning a firearm, traveling outside of the country, working for the government, getting professional licenses (teaching, medical, financial), or go into the military.

Don't be a rat. A friend's dad is a criminal defense lawyer who took a case where his client was a rat to get out of some charges and started making up things about people to get the cops to leave him alone. The cops harassed him for several months and they beat him up at least twice. I'd rather keep my mouth shut. IOW, once you become a rat, neither the cops nor your friends will respect you. Don't do it.

Don't roll on anyone. There's other ways to get back at people then ratting them. Cops and courts don't like rats either.

NEVER RAT ON ANY1........that definately shouldnt of been considered, duhhh. sorry, but are you like 12 or something?!? but anyway......yea, ive had numerous(like more than 10)posession with intent to distribute charges over the years(sometimes picking up new 1 while still on probation)and never put up any1 else! ive never got ANY jailtime, except for the arresting to bail out/court in morning.

They will put you in one room your bro or whom ever in a separate room. they will tell you a bunch of lies about how the other person. has put the whole thing on you and how your going to prison fro a X# of years and they don't believe the other person, are you sure it wasn't the other person who did the what ever. fuck snitches and lawyers, you have chump charges, dont take probation and dont give them bastards any money,do your two weeks and be about your business. i learned a lot about the bullshit while locked up for 4 months, it changed the way i look at the world and the system, go lay it down and do some push ups, it will be good to dry out for a couple weeks, jails are overcrowded and you wont be there long

Back from the county jail again. My friend was supposed to bond me out, but pocketed the money and was telling me bullshit about he went and paid. Now I found out the fucker went home for the weekend with my cash. Sucks when people try to get over on someone already down on their luck.
