Good Genetics

Hey everyone
I have another question that I need help with. I have been reading and everything states to start off with the best genetics you can get a hold of. So what would be good genetics and how would you know?
I have purchased a few packs of seeds from seedbay and also picked up a few clones from a dispensary. The seeds I purchased produced a lot of males and just one female. Is that any kind of sign of good or bad genetics? I have also read that what they sell at the dispensary is crap so I am kinda confused. What does one look for?

Thanks in advance and I hope no one flames me cause when I use the search feature I get 0 results.

BOG is a good place to start. Super stable indicas of power.
Watch your temps when germinating. High heat leads to more males, imo.

Cheers!

If you get clones from the dispensary make sure you isolate them from your grow room for the first week or so and scope them for bugs and diseases. Dispensaries are notorious for handing out clones that are infested with bugs and diseases, which could ruin a whole grow op in a matter or weeks.

Hey Kcar, thanks for the input. I will have to get some of BOG's gear when the finances permit. The wife has been a little upset on all the money I have been spending on my new hobby. Also, I would have never of thought that high temps may cause more males. Next batch of seeds I try and germinate, I will definately watch my temps.

Hi there kiwi growa, hate to say, but I found out that info the hard way. I purchased some clones from a dispensary called Harborside out in Oakland CA and now I have a problem with what I found out to be spider mites. Damn things just bite into the leaves and suck the life right out of my gals then spread like a mother f****r. I think and hope I now have them under control but from what I have read it may be difficult to completely wipe them out. But I have my eye on it now.

Also was wondering if anyone has any input if the clones from the dispensary are any good. A friend told me that the really good genetics are not actually sold and are kept from being mass produced type of a thing. Is that what really goes on? Just wondering if you guys have any thoughts on that cause if thats the case I would rather spend my money on some good quality genetics than buy something from the dispensary just to find out it is crap with a great name.

Hi BasementGrower, so what you are saying is the dispensary wants me to fail so I keep buying their meds instead of growing and providing my own meds? That is low of them. I really wanna be successful now. I cant keep paying their outrages prices.

Your wife will likely go thru what a lot of partners do with the start of your hobby, but focus on cleanliness, production, and time for her still and you should succeed and she will be happy...

Time for her is most important, from a guy who has put my gardening above every female I have been with...!

Germ seeds in wet paper towel in a ziplock on top of your fridge, mine typically pop in 1 to 4 days this way and i get good male to female ratio...if you got that high percentage of males I would throw all the starts out, but that me and just what I would do.

Harborside actually carries a lot of good stock, but they may have mites. for mights get your hands on Mighty Wash. It works and is safe all the way thru flower. I am up north in California and we have mights in California...I used to use Avid, Floramite, neem, etc....none work like Mighty Wash, and none are as clean and safe. You will always have to use a means of preventative in California. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to say, and no offense, but your friend doesn't know what he or she is talking about. The shops take cuts from anyone and everyone at times, sure. But they also have good cuts from good growers who actually know what they are doing with genetic stock.

Good strains to start with from California are: Hindu Skunk, Blue Dream, Black Domina, Green Ribbon, Midnight, SFV OG, and many many others. All of which should be easily and legally found.

Hope this helps and good luck on your gardening adventures!

Hi SunGrown, Thanks for taking the time for that really informative post. I truly cant wait to provide my wife with my very first batch of meds. Then the expense will be forgotten about.

Yeah the seeds I germed I put in jiffy pellets and I think I just f****d them up. I didnt really know what I was doing and at that time I was really intimidated to post and ask questions. When I have more money to purchase some seeds I will surely ask how to handle them. But hey I did get one female. YaY! Hopefully she turns out to be great.

I will have to get some of that Mighty Wash too. The store sold me neem oil which seems to only work for maybe a week till those f'ers are back at it.

Thanks too for the info about Harborside. I was a little pissed about the spider mites but it may just be worth dealing with if I can get a hold of good genetics. I did purchase one of the strains you mentioned, SFV OG from Harborside. All the others, I do not believe they have or did not when I was there. I may just have to plan another trip. Just such a long drive.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out. The IC is really turning out to be a great learning experience for me!

No problem. I always remember what it was like first starting, you are lucky to be starting where you can go to a shop...way easier these days for sure!

I cant private message or I would, but anyway, the jiffy pellets are peat based, peat tends to have ph problems so that may have been the issue. I'm in the mountains in north California, and i refuse to go to any city any longer, but years ago I had success with some of the clubs in Berkeley and Oakland, shit even LA. So I know it is possible but I will not go to any city any longer.

And neem is a bandaid and does nothing for the eggs.

You will love the sfvog but there is a big learning curve to learning to make her produce right.

SunGrown, I have not been to Berkeley yet. I read they just won a cup with their Cookies and thought about giving it a try.

But that learning curve you speak of. Where do you gain that knowledge or is it an experience kind of thing? I just posted a very similar question in the nutrient area of this site. It seems from my first grow that it is going to take a little more than the basic grow and bloom fertilizers. How do you learn what a girl needs I guess is my question?

I know that I am getting way off topic but I really want to learn. I want to be a great grower not just another grower.

Your help is much appreciated.

I'll see if I can find your other topic and reply there. I keep things simple for the most part, and I never advocate buying things in fancy bottles with fancier price tags.

The learning curve is that each strain typically has a sweet spot as far as light, food, training, etc...and that knowledge usually only comes with experience. Or copying exactly what someone else has done successfully can sometimes work. Then at some point you master all that and then you may start learning about mixing your own nutrients, or things like triacontanol, 6-bap, etc...

SunGrown, thanks again for the tips and taking the time for me. I can not wait to gain this knowledge. I think I have found my purpose in life lol.

I would like to start mixing my own nutes but the wife wants me to stop spending so much. Every time I go out I am picking up more stuff. I am like a kid in a candy store and want it all. I want to try everything. Wish I had deep pockets lol.

Thanks for the info my friend.

I just said it in your other thread, but every dollar you don't spend is a dollar you can bury.

By learning to mix your own nutes and boosters, you will be saving money. If you want to go all organic it's a lot different and I really am not any kind of pro with 100% organics. But you can build up a good soil mix, subcool had a good mix, and you can make very easy inexpensive "teas"

But if you want to mix your own salts, 100$ worth can last many, many grows.
