gonna build a greenhouse, need some ideas

ok, the proposed plan is to build a greenhouse, that looks like a shed so it will blend with the surroundings of my backyard. the roof will be some sort of clear paneling but i might put a light frosted coat of paint that will help to keep from looking through. i have a hydro hut that is 4ft by 4ft but i think i want this a little bit bigger. either 6x6-8x8. somewhere in there.

it gets pretty hot here, actually really hot so im planning on doing some heat tolerant strains. any suggestions in that area- my guess would be some afghanis, ak's or some north african strains.

to help deal with the heat i am planning on digging out underneath the "shed" at least 3 or 4 feet into the ground. that way i can plant underground which will cool things down a bit as well as giving me more head room. i was told that i could have up to three grow seasons here. the winter is pretty mild compared to most. i put 5 little ones outside last night and they seem to have survived with little ill effect.

any suggestions, or do you see any inherent flaws in my plan? i live where there is a lot of agriculture so there are always some funky smells around. i might put scrubber in there if need be and just insulate it really well so there is no noise. im always catching whiffs of skunk and funky agriculture odor so i dont think this would be too noticeable.... let me know what you guys think. im eager to get started

sounds like youve been reading some of my threads about a greenhouse that looks like a shed.

for the roofing material, i would use palram polycarbonate opal panels. avail. at home depot.

they allow 45% light transmission but they are white so no one, including flying pigs, can see through them.

as far as digging into the ground, the only prob i see it if you get a lot of rain youre going to have a pond!

and i would def. use some kind of odor control.
carbon, or ona. hell in one greenhouse grow, i used bounce dryer sheets!
they work great but you need to spread a whole box of them around the greenhouse and after a week replace them with a new box.

what about an ozone generator? would the GH have to be completely sealed for one of those to work?

i dont know, ive never used one.

but you dont want to seal up a GH because the heat would cook your plants.

but, i'm wondering if you could run an air conditioner in one and keep it sealed?

i'll do some research and let you know.

i have a friend who built a shed with clear roof panels and covered it with 30%(?) shade cloth. some other friends actually went over it in a hot air ballon and said it looked like a tar roof...You never want to completely seal a greenhouse for extended periods of time. i open at least a couple vents on each side of mine during the day, even in the rain, i just make sure to seal it up around 3 o'clock to hold the heat in mine during the night. a supplemental 400 or 600w light is nice to extend the daylight period during these winter months and helps warm it up and dry out the condensation. I'll be updating my greenhouse thread in the next few days (its a whopper by my standards!)

How far down to bedrock is it where you live, Wouldn't digging out the whole bottom of a greenhouse be tons of work for negligible gain, Correct me if Im wrong but the reason the ground stays cooler is because it holds the cold in the dirt, If you removed it it would just be like putting them on the ground just a little lower...
Also as far as the drier sheets, NO
I once had a friend that I gave some of my homegrown stinky SDv3 crosses to, he put it in a bag inside of something and then wrapped it in drier sheets, it tasted like drier sheets then.
Get a huge can and a huge blower, air exchange in a greenhouse is pretty important, why do you think they all have 5 foot fans on the end

An idea, find a goodwill or housewares second hand type place.And buy used sliding glass doors.This would help you construct a real glass greenhouse in the $200-$300 dollar range for all the used doors.Mount the doors to the side of a house and you only need half as many .

the point is to be stealth, not clear and open for all to see haha. i think i will go with a 8x6 metal shed i found for 179 and replace the roof with the opal /white polycarbonate sheating. that stuff is kinda expensive. its like 19 bucks for a piece 2x8 but oh well. you gotta do what you gotta do. i will need 3 of em to make the roof so it will cost me about 260 or so when its all said and done. i think i will get it in a few days and start bulding it. my geuss is its going to be a bitch to put together. it comes in a little tiny box with all kinds of shit packed in it.

Hopefully your neighbors wont take notice of your new found love shed and how much daily time your spending in her ,.

Keeping a stealthy entrance is equally important,. connecting to your house some way would be ideal - even to a window would help.
or another shed,. or an underground tunnel,.. he he..

next - keeping the plants as close to the natural light would be best - or you'll get long stems reaching for the light.
and also, air circulation is very important,..

That is using the translucent panels from Home Depot, they are 2 feet X 12 feet for $20--
This is out in the desert, and heat is a major issue-- For a small one like you want, you can get away with 1 swamp cooler and a couple of vents--
The other good thing about the white panels, is that it just looks like a white metal roof from a distance--

Blueberry, Will you have electricity in yours? I've gotten away with using a 20 inch fan in my 8x4 gh and it gets into the 100's here in the summer. You'll also want some venting because it can get awfully humid in there.
