Going to the Yucatan for Vacation(Tulum, Merida)

So I'm going to the Yucatan next month for a 10 day vacation. I'm flying into Cancun, and then heading away from there.

If anyone has any tips let me know.

So far we were thinking of heading to Tulum for a few days, Chicen Itza for a night(to wake up early and see the ruins), and then Merida for a few days more. Then back to Cancun to head home.

I'm looking to spend some time on the beach, see some ruins, and swim in a cenote. I'd like to look at some art while I'm there as well. I'm interested in Huichol art.

If anyone has any tips to make it less touristy, less pricy, etc...I'm all open. I also heard there are other ruins which might not be as large as Chicen Itza but cooler...I think Copa was mentioned.

My friend, who I'm going with, said that Tulum has gotten much more expensive since the last time they went. So I'm open to any other areas as well.

Thanks in advance.

Tulum is nice for sure, with a nice beach you can swim at. That being said, it's on the smaller side of ruins, yet still very beautiful. Depending on where you are, it'll probably require a ferry ride and some travel. Having been there, I would say if you have to choose between Tulum or another site you are very interested in... go with the other. Tulum is a bit pricey plus it was very crowded! Again though, it is still an amazing place!

I just want a nice place to chill on the beach. My friend recommended Tulum since they said it was beautiful. I'm more going there for the beach than the ruins. We're thinking Chichen Itza for the ruins.

I am honestly salty about going down there. I wanted to go to Asia. Way cheaper and beautiful beaches. This was my friends choice, so I'm trying to make it work.

Yo man I remember a member British_hempire.
He was posting about a Mexican El Yycatan and by his words it was insanely good.
I need to find his post again. There were some nice pics of the plant too.

Ok looks like I was wrong :X
Yucatero is probably different than Yucatan.
Sorry bad memory :p

Another clone only that I found from seed and have passed on to a few folks around the UK, and I know at least one guy has passed her onto a few friends, so hopefully should become more popular and widespread soon. It's the 'El Yucateca' Mexican I grew from seeds I smuggled back from Cancun in 2005. 14 weeks, enormous yield, very potent, speedy, racing clear high, quite unique effects and spearmint/menthol taste, I fucking love this plant, it's probably my favourite. 'Mexican Marching Weed' is probably the most appropriate name for this bugger, super speedy high, you have to get up and do something, no vegging on the couch with this one!

I have only been to Cozumel for the diving.
Always wanted to check out Tulum and Merida.

Should be some good snorkeling on the Caribbean side.

Local weed we got years ago sucked.

Well you've got 2 bus options to Tulum...1. You can take the nice air conditioned tourist bus, or 2...Take the old, beatup, non air conditioned bus that picks up the locals along the way. At least that the way it was when I was there. We opted to hang with the locals. It was a great trip and it cost 1/10 of the tourist option. I really enjoyed Tulum. You can also take the ferry over to Cozumel and there's a few ruins there as well...San Gervasio for one, and then out by the lighthouse are some old ruins as well.

I've never been down there, but I know others & have family. IIRC, Merida is not only a historical town, but has its own art scene. Are you into art? I love the archaeology, so I would say get as much in as you can. But, I also love the beach and swimming and scuba, so I'd say get as much of that in as you can.

You're not going to have enough time.

Thanks SeaMaiden...I love art. It's definitely a big part of why I wanted to go to Merida.

I've looked into maybe going to Isla Holbox....does anyone have any experience with that?

I'm really surprised by how pricy Tulum is....Southeast Asian beach front places can be found for much cheaper in a multitude of countries. It might just be the shorter flights from the states driving prices up.

I've decided to go to Holbox and booked a place for 6 or 7 nights. It should be relaxing. We plan on going to Merida for 2 or 3 nights and then back to cancun to fly home. Any tips on Merida would be appreciated. I've got a friend of a friend who lives there, and they recommended a few things.

I've never been to isla holbox, looks interesting. I've been to tulum a bunch of times, it's really blown up you could say it's becoming more like playa. I stayed in merida for new years about 8 years ago and had an awesome time. It's safe place to walk around, plenty of cops with machine guns on the backs of pickup trucks or cruising around on motorcycles, we didn't see anything remotely sketchy. Lots of cool art, cafes, bars, old architecture. I stayed at a b&b run by some people from houston and met lots of expats.

Thanks to both of you for chiming in. Yeah Holbox seemed right up my alley.

I'm hoping we'll have time to visit some of the cenotes or ruins, but the main objective is straight beach and relax for the beginning. Merida should give us the culture we're looking for on the tail end for a few days.

Thanks for the advice on the book. I'll pick it up this week.

Thanks for the well wishes Benzo. I'm sure it will be a great time. I'm definitely grateful for how blessed I've been in my life.

Booked a nice spot in Merida for 2 nights. Which should be really nice.
