Alice needs her vaccinations today but she just hates the veterinarians office terribly, she used to be well behaved there but in the last few years she's developed some fear about going there. They've even given me some sedatives to calm her down for this simple visit.

So what's up with your pup or kitty or critter when you visit the vets office, I'm hoping that there's got to be a good story or two you can share here.......

we have mobile vets here in so cal. they show up in diff spots. the company has a crew of vets. usually outside a pet store. routine shots can be gotten there. dog hasnt figured it out yet . unlike the old vets office.after shots doggie and i go into pet store for treats. no issues. the money i save from using mobile vet gets spent in pet store. i prob break even. my shepard didnt have any vet issues from day one she was chill.she dont leave property now so havent gotten recent shots yet.

My dog loves going anywhere. He doesnt realize the con thats going on at the vet office though.
Let me tell you a story of the BS ive gone through in the past couple of months!
I had a friend throw a ball off my balcony and my dog went flying down th stairs. He came up limping really bad. I noticed a large lump on his leg. I took him to the vet and they wanted to take an xray. They told me they would have to knock him out to take the shots. They wanted $750 +/- 10% for the pics.
I got the hell out of there and took him to another vet. That vet didnt want to take an xray and told me it was probably a bone bruise. That made no sense to me so I took him to another vet.
The other vet took and xray and discovered a fracture near his shoulder area. He alsoo took a needle sample of the spot and told me it was a tumor on his arm. He told told me we could cut it out or leave it untreated. He didnt recommend a specialist or anything. $700for the visit and tests.
The lump started to get larger so I took him back to his old vet. They started taking messurements and suggested we have them cut the tumor out. They quoted $1200 for the surgery. The surgeon was not even in the room at the time.
I went to my chiropractor and we were talking about holistic yada yada yada. He recommends I talk to his friend who works in a pet store who knows holistic ideas. She recommended I take him to an oncologist. Duh!
We went to see an onchologist and they recommended Chemo therapy. He also mentioned radiation, bu said that radiation would cause severe side effects at the location and my dog might get an infection. They didnt do radiation there, so he gave me a card of someone about 50-75 miles away...
We also saw a board certified surgeon who works in that office and she said we should give chemo a try or cut his leg off. The tumor cant be removed!
My dog has hip dysplasia so amputation is not an option. Chemo has possible side effects.
I found out that the Radiation clinic he suggested has a much closer office, so I set up an appointment at that location. When we arrived there we were told how our dog needs radiation and chemo wont do much because the tumor is localized in one spot. He told us we need to hit it with radiation because chemo is more like a shotgun approach if the cancer is spreading through the entire body.
We decided to go with paliative Radiation. We were told there would be no side effects and everything would be fine. Estimated cos was $2K +/- 10%.
What do you know? They always get you for that extra 10% plus extra meds and follow up exams...
Anyway, I took my dog for a follow up and the doctor said his reaction wasnt too bad and we could stop the antibiotics and take the cone off of him the next day.
The next day my dog had an appointment with a dermatologist. I took off the cone and when we got to th office he was really concerned with my dogs wound. Without asking me he called the oncologist office to make sure it would be ok for me to stop by without an appointment. Before I left he let me know he was really concerned and thought I needed to take my dog back.
When I got back there my doc wasnt in. He saw a different oncologist who wanted to order $1,000 worth of tests. She took some samples and prescribed a new antibiotic.
A tech came running out to quietly talk to me about the costs... The oncologist had not mentioned she had just ordered $1,000 worth of testing!!! The girl advised me not to pay for them and to talk to the regular doc on monday.
So I took him back on monday ready to kick some ass! The doc didnt charge us and told us not to come back for 2 months! The last time we were in he wanted to see him again in a month!
Im sure I missed some of the parts where I got fucked around, but you get the jist, Im sure!

sorry for your situation Tribal, I spent an easy 3-4K on my Kayla during the last 8/9 months of her life. they cut out what cancer they could but it was too late & had begun to spread. She made a wonderful recovery in her day to day health and enjoyed 5 months of really feeling better and getting friskier than she had in awhile. Watching her slow down in the end was painful but the moment she showed that pain was affecting her I said goodbye quickly, there was no way I would allow the last of her time to be an accumulation of bad days.

Alice is still as high as a kite & sleeping off her buzz.......

My old dog hated the vet. Shook and drooled and whined the whole time, the moment she smelled 'vet'. Never could break her of it just like I could never get her used to spray bottles. I'm pretty sure someone abused the poor dog with a spray bottle, her reaction was always that strong.

Hazey-Haze doesn't mind the vet at all. Biggest problem is getting her to step on the scale, though. It's like she sprouts these powerful rare earth magnets in her feet and DAMN if you can leverage her ass onto the scale! My son can get her to step right onto it, though. :dunno:

My dog loves the vet. She makes a little noise as she gets her vaccinations. Her Vet makes it all better with, doggie kisses.

But, the specialist's..similar experience, TribalSeed, with his broken jaw and another that was munched by the neighbors critter. When our helpless pets hurt...the credit card is right there. And, the vets know it.

My regular vet, tends to add in a bunch of $30 comfort items, i generally refuse.

Once, I sat in a Vets office with turtles, chickens, birds, cats, dogs and a bunch of 2 legged, rednecked hot-headed waiting, anxious pet owners. What a Zoo! You couldn't hear a darn thing. And if that wasn't enough, a cat got loose..then a bird and it was summer, the door was open. I took my turn and left. jpt
