I have never been there but have heard that it is beautiful and lots of fun. Please advise on places to go, things to see, places to dive (scuba) and how to get green! Thank you all for your input!

Yeah, I recommend you head down south to the islands too. Koh Tao is a great place to get certification for diving and works out very good value if you take one of the packages. Can't recommend a place specifically, but there are lots of Dive places that look very professional and will have lots of reviews online.

For non-diving, the island of Koh Phangan is a nice chilled place. On the West coast (I recommend Had Yao - High Life bungalows has some nice places starting at 500baht) it's very relaxed about the smoking as long as you're not causing trouble. You can buy it from many many places, 500b for either brick weed from Cambodia or the occasional locally grown, picked early weed (much better). Haad Rin, where the full moon parties are, is like a student party every night. Lots of tacky, drunkenness, but famous and busy. A bit 18-30ish.

Koh Samui, the other island, is dangerous to smokers and has well documented scams involving the police arresting and extorting cash from tourists. Just stay away - you're not missing much.

The rest of your trip in Thailand will be affected by the weather system at the time you're going. But general weed etiquette is, don't do it obviously. Locals get paid for reporting ppl breaking the law, and it is very much against the law in Thailand. So be extremely wary and as discreet as you possibly can. The islands mentioned are chilled and less risky, and random pockets of backpacking spots are fine, but it's easy to find a local who disapproves.

Generally though, Thais are very passive people who won't bother you as long as you're doing no wrong. Respect their ways, don't take the piss, enjoy the amazing scenery and you'll be fine.

Southern Thailand like mentioned before is gorgeous. I'm leaving for BKK myself in a few days. Sorry no hookups for green. Supposedly there's a buddist temple somewhere up north where the monks grow but it could just be an old legend/rumor. Thankfully the protesting is over so don't sweat that anymore. Another place I like is Hua Hin. Actually will be checking out some businesses that are for sale in that area while I'm visiting.

ahh I'd love to be making this trip :)

I've neer been but friends tell me to avoid tourist areas (as above :)) and that "100 dollars will get you out of pretty much any tight spot" .. I don't actually know if thats true, but personally I would make sure I had a few dollars for any such situations :)
