Goin bigger need a little help

Hey all,

I just joined a few months ago, have a couple micro grows under my belt, nothing serious.

I recently have the opportunity to go a bit bigger.

I have a $1200 budget and that has to cover everything, My micro grows were in pc cases which I just wanna upgrade.

I have no clones and no seeds. Genetics will have to be in the $1200 and I am set on buying feminized.

I also am set on a 400w CMH inside a DR120.

question that i have is that i can't tell if im just not shopping around enough or is this deal on bghydro a good deal?

I have never used CMH and I was wondering if i coudl get some input on a good ballast (preferably with a cool tube, I know HPS, but never worked with anything besides cfls so don't know about brands and such)

Hps is better then CMH for flowering, so unless u plan to only veg plants i would go with a HPS(hps is cheaper anyways). Also keep a lookout on craigslist, i've found so many awsome deals on craigslist for hydro gear. As far as seeds go i would check out seedbay, u can get some fem seeds for around 40-50$



edit- That deal isn't terribe but if u use craigslist/ebay u can get that stuff for almost half the price (I got a 400watt light with air cooled hood, 171cfm blower, 3'11",3'11",6'5" homebox and some nutes/chains/ducting for around 260. All this stuff was new besides the HPS , just keep a eye open on craigslist/ebay )

Hey man, welcome to the step up! What kind of space do you have to work with were you are going to grow?

You can definately save money by not buying the DR120 tent.
You can always build a grow box to the dimensions that you want!

Your 1200 dollar budget can set you up with a killer setup man.
I am in canada and have spent $$1400 for a 2000w setup with 50 plants!
**EDIT** If your set on buying a prefab tent check out ebay for them. You can buy a 4'x4'x6' tent with shipping for about $280.00 or less. And i meant you could construct a frame outa 2"x4" boards or 2"x2" boards would work and then wrap 6mil Poly(white and black light proof material) around it.

The combo package is an OK deal if you don't have specific equipment in mind.

I suggest that dr120 combo with a 600w HPS/Super Sun 2 hood (http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HLHPS06SS2&eq=) and get an additional 4'' vortex to cool the light itself. That will be a powerful and flexible tent in which you can run a tray, or just stock the floor with pots or whatever you want to try down the road.

400w is like half the recommended lighting (50w per square foot) so definitely consider the 600w if possible.

Hey whatever you do, don't get a knockoff tent on ebay or anywhere else, as there have been massive problems with off-gassing from the interior cover killing plants on all the random Hydrohut-style tents. Get a Secret Jardin Dark Room tent (my preference as i use 2 of them) or a Homebox, as they are the ones that have been problem free. Or build it yourself as ManitobaGrower suggested if you're that kinda guy.

Yeah you can use one fan or two, with two being a more efficient setup with some distinct advantages. Basically you will use one fan to exhaust air from the tent, it will pull from the carbon scrubber and then out the tent, and another which pulls air from outside the tent, through the light reflector, then out of the tent as well. That way you are always cooling the light with cool air from outside the tent rather than with heated air from inside the tent.

Here's my dr120 when i was using it as a flower tent:



I keep the fans in a closet to the side and they exhaust to the attic from there via holes in the ceiling.

I traded my HPS for CMH and am very happy. 600 is underpowered for that tent unless the grow is packed into the corner. If you use the whole floor space, two 400s would be perfect.
